The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate – Laboratory Technician to do soil manure and plant nutrient analysis with a focus on carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Responsibilities

  • Extraction & filtration of soil, manure and plant samples for photometric nutrient analysis;
  • Preparation of soil, manure and plant samples for elemental analysis (C/N analyser);
    Running photometric nutrient assays for extractable phosphate, nitrate and ammonium;
  • Preparation and analysis of soil, manure and plant samples for total phosphorus (dry digestion, extraction, colorimetric analysis);
  • Summarizing all lab data in a clear and concise manner, performing regular data quality checks and giving feedback to the supervising lab technicians;
  • Assisting Mazingira’s lab technicians with other sample preparations and sample analyses to ensure timely analysis

    Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Environmental studies, Agriculture, Chemistry, or similar;
  • Master’s degree in the same field or 3 years of experience will be an added advantage;
  • General understanding of soil science, knowledge of basic biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in ecosystems with a focus on soils;
  • Basic statistical knowledge and capability to handle datasets with Excel;
  • Willingness to learn new measurement techniques in the lab
  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience doing sample preparation and processing
  • At least 1 year of experience with photometric assays (nitrogen, phosphorus)

    Terms of Appointment

    This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 1
    year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
