ILRI Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Kampala - Uganda

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a post-doctoral research fellow to lead work on participatory technology development and assessment that will be practically impactful as well as theoretically informed. The research covers Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya.



ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.


Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.


ILRI Post-Doctoral Fellowships Post-Doctoral Fellow, Participatory livestock technology development and assessment in Kampala - Uganda



Responsibilities:


  • Lead research that canvasses various livestock systems for promising endogenous adaptation practice and dynamics
  • Design, implement, monitor and analyse participatory field experiments, in coordination with biophysical researchers on the team
  • Contribute to scaling out and scaling up of most promising practices
  • Contribute to the development of practical protocols for analysing trade-offs between social and biophysical outcomes. These protocols should be designed for use by stakeholders.
  • Communicate findings to stakeholders (ministry staff, livestock extension officers, donors)
  • Write scientific papers and prepare conference presentations and other communication products on the key results.
  • Coordinate PCSL project activities in Uganda, including supervision of PhD and MSc students.


    Requirements:


  • PhD in social sciences (geography, anthropology, innovation studies, rural sociology, etc.), but working knowledge of agricultural, livestock and/or environmental sciences. Knowledge of climate change adaptation and/or mitigation would be a considerable advantage
  • Strong practical and
    theoretical skills, focusing on participatory processes and co-production of knowledge in agriculture.
  • Experience in research for development in Africa, especially East Africa, would be a significant advantage
  • The ability to effectively communicate in a multicultural context, present findings to diverse audiences, and support facilitation of multi-stakeholder workshops
  • The ability to collaborate with scientists and technicians from other disciplines (biogeochemistry, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, veterinary medicine etc.) in an interdisciplinary and multicultural team
