The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral Researcher to conduct monitoring and evaluation research under the CGIAR One Health Initiative. The One Health Initiative aims to conduct research that supports our partners to operationalize one health principles in food systems.

The initiative is built on three research pillars – Zoonoses, Food safety, and Antimicrobial Resistance – with cross-cutting themes of Economics, Behavior and Governance, and Water. ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa (www.ilri.org).


Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and analysis related to the monitoring and evaluation of the One Health Initiative
  • Collaborate on quantitative and qualitative data analysis and literature reviews; draft reports, academic publications, and briefs; deliver presentations on topics related to One Health, zoonoses, food safety, AMR, nutrition, gender, and evaluation of complex programs
  • Contribute to research outputs for publication outlets both within the CGIAR, and for peer-reviewed journals within the wider scientific community, on topics of relevance to the One Health Initiative
  • Communicate research to a broad spectrum of stakeholders (researchers, academics, donors, policy makers, local partners).
  • Critically review work plans and deliverables and work closely with partners to document OH Initiative progress towards key CGIAR performance indicators and the achievement of milestones and outcomes
  • Assist initiative management, researchers and initiative partners to incorporate theory of change approaches in research planning and reporting, which may include but is not limited to defining outputs, identifying outcomes, and assessing influence and capturing processes of change
  • Assist in reporting on Initiative activities.
  • May assist in supervising or coordinating the work of Research support staff
  • Support or manage external evaluations and ensure that they run according to plan and are delivered on time
  • Ensure evaluators have access to all relevant program documents and relevant stakeholders
  • Facilitate involvement of other staff in the evaluation and provide regular updates
  • Provide and collate feedback on the evaluation plan and interim and final deliverables
  • Resolve problems or identify others who can resolve them, as needed
  • Manage consultants, on occasion, to develop evidence outputs such as synthesis products. This may include writing requests for proposals, reviewing contract applications, monitoring contract milestones and overall project progress, and reviewing of deliverables.
  • Support the OH initiative Leads in following governance principles set by CGIAR
  • Assist with the preparation of agendas and materials for meetings between Initiative leadership and CGIAR management.
  • Document decisions and action items in meeting summaries, make them accessible in a timely manner, and monitor progress towards action items to ensure that appropriate follow-up is taken.
  • Build and maintain
    relationships with geographically dispersed research, research support, communications, and finance staff to implement program activities, and, on occasion, to develop new activities
  • Organize workshops and events, including developing agendas, inviting presenters and participants, overseeing meeting logistics and multimedia presentations, and preparing written summaries
  • Manage internal communications across the OH Initiative, including maintaining online content management systems so that files are organized and accessible in collaboration with communication and knowledge management colleagues at ILRI


    Requirements
  • PhD in One Health, Food Systems, M&E, Public Health, Food Safety or related areas
  • Demonstrated at least 5 years’ experience in managing projects with multiple partners and substantial budget, preferably in an international research environment
  • Emerging track record on M&E, food systems and One Health
  • Substantial experience in applying research methodologies and processes
  • Familiarity with food, nutrition, agricultural, public health and/or rural development issues in low- and middle-income countries
  • Demonstrated experience in interacting with stakeholders (donors, governments, non-governmental organizations, and research organizations), preferably in an international environment
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated experience working in a multi-cultural team environment
  • Ability to interact and communicate with diverse audiences
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as necessary.
  • Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya

    Terms of Appointment
    This position is at job level HG 16. The position is a 2-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances
