ILRI PhD Graduate Fellowship in Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Kenya

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a PhD Graduate Fellow for the CGIAR research program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).

Political incentives and international obligations around the 2016 Paris Agreement have created a situation in which national governments must report progress on adaptation and mitigation to the UNFCCC on a regular basis.

Many governments in sub-Saharan Africa have submitted (Intended) Nationally Determined Contributions, or (I)NDCs, specifying their adaptation and mitigation targets along with activities to be implemented to achieve them.

There is considerable demand from many countries for scientifically-based information that can be used to help prioritize adaptation and mitigation actions that can be implemented in pursuit of their NDCs.

The interface between scientific knowledge production and policy processes has significant implications for international reporting as well as for national and subnational prioritization and climate change intervention strategies.

The countries of East Africa are at different stages in this process, and to facilitate the next NDC cycle, identifying “good practice” around the mechanisms by which the science-policy interface can be effectively bridged is extremely important.

The International Livestock Research Institute’s (ILRI) mission is to improve food and nutritional security and to reduce poverty in middle and low-income countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock (better lives through livestock).

Through its capacity development approach, ILRI purposes to equip a critical mass of individuals and organizations with the skills to design, implement and maintain appropriate livestock research and development initiatives.

ILRI works through partnerships with other CG centres, international organizations, national institutions and programs, higher education institutions, private sector and others.

The Position:

This project seeks to recruit an ambitious PhD researcher to analyse and compare science-policy engagement practices and processes concerning climate change adaptation and mitigation in the region’s diverse livestock systems across three East African countries.

The candidate should expect to analyse existing policy frameworks and dynamics, barriers and enabling factors for integrating climate change research into policies and strategies, efficacy of science communication and engagement strategies, and transformation of scientific inputs through their integration into policy processes.
