ILRI Consultancy - Smartphone Gaming App - Jobs in Kenya


  • International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a consultant to develop a smartphone gaming app for visioning climate smart livestock systems in East Africa.

  • The focus countries are Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia, but the app should be flexible to be used globally. It will be based on collecting and merging existing innovations in this sector.

  • ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock.

  • It is the only one of 15 CGIAR Research Centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

  • Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

    Scope of Work

  • The gaming app developer will work closely with researchers involved in the Program for Climate Smart Livestock (PCSL) to design a game prototype for deployment in East Africa.

  • The result will be an app using game structures to draw players in and structure their interactions, while having the exploration of various futures as a main focus.
    The app would aim to:

  • Build futures capacity in different communities

  • Stimulate creative thinking about what innovations exist that could lead to better futures and what could be done
    to enable these
    Crowd-source ideas of desirable futures for livestock in different communities that could be used in policy and other research

  • Act as a platform for information sharing on adaptation and mitigation options and pathways to communities

  • Act as a mechanism for sharing between communities about their ideas of desirable futures

  • The app would need to be localised to the East African context, with translation into local languages, using local artwork etc.

    Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in game development or other relevant discipline

  • At least ten years of experience with high level game development

  • Specialised technical skills, including software development, required for the development of online gaming applications

  • Track record of successful game app development

  • Experience in developing sustainability apps with researchers

  • Willingness to work with local partners
