ILRI Consultancy - Livestock management systems and climate change Jobs in Kenya


The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Digital Media and Content Specialist to be responsible for the execution of the institutes digital content strategy and produce content to support the delivery of ILRI’s purpose.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

Responsibilities:

  • Review the challenges of climate change poses for livestock management systems in Africa with a view to identifying best practices and opportunities for adapting these management systems in the face of climate change.
  • Prepare a technical paper on livestock management systems, including agropastoral production systems and others in the context of Africa. The report should draw heavily on previously published findings from ILRI along with other literature and include sections on:
    Major livestock systems by African subregion (Eastern, Western, Central, Northern, and Southern)
  • Major challenges for these systems (brief general overview); challenges presented by climate change up to 2035, including a summary of projected livestock sector development (e.g. from integrated assessment model analyses) (main focus)
  • Top 10-15 intervention options to improve livestock management indicated by the system(s) to which they are applicable and the projected outcomes for adaptation and mitigation co-benefits
  • Identification of knowledge gaps by system and by intervention based on peer-reviewed and grey literature
  • Barriers and challenges to the identified intervention options
  • Present the technical paper at the pre-SBs 52 Strategy Meeting of AGNES to be held in Nairobi in March/April 2020 (exact dates to be determined)

    Final products

  • An inception report on proposed workplan and timeline (within 2 weeks of signing contract)
  • A draft technical paper on livestock management systems, including agropastoral production systems and
    others in the context of Africa with the sections listed above, through close consultation with ILRI staff (by 30th November 2019)
  • Present the draft technical paper at the AGNES strategic meeting to be held in March or April 2020
  • Final technical paper by 30th May 2020

    Requirements

  • PhD degree in agriculture, agronomy, agricultural economics, social sciences, law, environment and natural resources or related field of study.
  • Knowledge about the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) climate change negotiations and the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA).
  • At least 10 years of professional experience with in-depth understanding of livestock production systems in Africa, including agropastoral production systems.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multicultural settings
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
