The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutrition security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.


International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a team of consultants/firm to conduct a bones and horns value chain analysis in five accelerated value chain development (AVCD) counties, train and incubate groups and individual entrepreneurs in two AVCD counties on the use of bones and horns to make various products like jewelries etc.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a bones and horns value chain analysis (VCA) in 5 counties (Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana and Wajir) under AVCD Livestock Component (LC), exploring constrains (skills & knowledge) and business opportunities (local, regional & export) for the value chain actors
  • Train one group and at least five individuals in each county (Isiolo and Marsabit) on bone and horns related business opportunities: harvesting of marrow and fats from bones, and use of bones, horns and teeth to make high quality crafts, curios, ornamentals etc. laying special focus on end market/export requirements.
  • Offer practical training/exposure during a two-week internship (incubation) to the trained groups and individuals from Isiolo and Marsabit counties respectively on value addition of bones and horns for the trainees to be able to make various high-quality products (e.g. Soap, well-polished ornaments) as per the end market/export specifications.
  • Promote establishment of business linkages that will orient the value chain actors towards more commercialization by organizing one national business to business (B2B) forum in Nairobi which will bring together different actors involved in bones, horns,
    and teeth value chain, both from the two AVCD LC counties and end market/export players. This forum will be expected to establish business relationships (backward and forward linkages) and building collaboration and partnership that can culminates into deal cutting / signing of contracts.

    Expected Deliverables

  • Bones and horns value chain analysis report: This will capture actors, constraints, opportunities and end market/export requirements, including lucrative export destinations.
  • Training packages in form of manual, brochures, flyers etc: These will contain market related information and specifications from different stratified market to be disseminated to the supply side actors. These messages will cover the different product lines: Jewelleries, ornaments among others.
    One group and at least five individuals from Isiolo and Marsabit counties trained and the trainees taken through a hands-on business incubation for at least 2 weeks, with a functional industrial / value chain actors: By the end of the incubation, these trainees should be able to make various high quality products from bones and horns (e.g. Soap, well-polished ornaments) as per the end market/export specifications.
  • Final report: The final report will document the methodology, lessons learnt, value of contracts signed (if any), conclusions and recommendations. Recommendations should be specific and feasible for immediate uptake by likeminded projects and/or USAID PREG partners moving forward.
