The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Communication Officer to support communications for the project titled Capacitating One Health in Eastern and Southern Africa (COHESA) www.ilri.org/research/projects/capacitating-one-health-eastern-and-southern-africa.

One Health refers to the coordinated approaches needed to better manage human, animal and environmental health. Its global relevance has come further to the for in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. This EU funded project COHESA seeks to build capacity in this area in Eastern and Southern Africa working in over 11 countries.

The candidate will implement the COHESA communications strategy to ensure partners and stakeholders are fully engaged and to maximise project impact. In addition, this position will spend a small portion of the time to ensure that COHESA integrates with other One Health activities at ILRI.

This role will help to communicate the project results to key stakeholders, support communications and coordination amongst project partners and mitigate any issues related to communication of results.

They will also be involved in wider project advocacy. This position will report to the One Health Communications Coordinator, and work closely with PI of COHESA and ILRI Communications and Knowledge Management Team.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy and Implementation

  • Review and develop the COHESA Comms and Knowledge Management plan that focuses on improving visibility and knowledge sharing internally and externally

    Knowledge Management/Knowledge Sharing

  • Provide regular updates on project findings and activities to key stakeholders (i.e. blog posts, newsletters)

  • Develop a newsletter to promote activities in COHESA

  • Organise and facilitate delivery of a webinar series

  • Facilitate (moderate) stakeholder and planning meetings when needed and provide relevant One Health promotional materials as needed

  • Ensure all outputs are curated onto COHESA CGspace collection

    Communications and External Engagement

  • Maintain and update online content
    including the ILRI online content and social media when applicable

  • Support editing of written outputs and knowledge products

  • Manage and support the COHESA Observatory (a virtual platform for One health knowledge sharing)

  • Source relevant posts from in-country partners

  • Engage with media in the different counties to bring visibility and build awareness on One Health capacity with governance and education in Collaboration with ILRI CKM Media and Advocacy Lead.

  • Work with country coordinators, country multipliers and stakeholders to generate progress and success stories and regular COHESA communication updates

  • Support production of knowledge products from COHESA findings that can be used in policy engagement and advocacy

    Coordination

  • Work closely with the ILRI One Health Communications Coordinator as the link to One Health activities to ensure that OH activities are visible at the Institutional level and within One CGIAR.

  • Work closely with the ILRI communications institutional team to ensure alignment with ILRI guidelines, messaging and other work.

    Reporting lines:

  • The position will report to One Health Coordinator, with secondary line reporting to the COHESA Primary Investigator

  • 10% of time will be allotted from ILRI communications (CKM)

    Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field

  • 7 years’ experience in communications for development, agriculture or One Health activities

  • Experience in developing communication and knowledge management strategies

  • Proven ability to communicate research findings using various media

  • Fluency in written English

  • Expertise in risk communication in project context

  • Experience in developing behaviour change communication plans to reach different audiences

  • Ability to facilitate stakeholder meetings.

  • Highly competent in using a range of web-based and social media tools

  • Knowledge of internal sharing tool such as share point an advantage
