Background

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, with 191 member National Societies.

Organizational Context

  • The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC or “the Federation”) is the world’s largest volunteer-based humanitarian network.
  • The Federation is a membership organisation established by and comprised of its member National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Along with National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Federation is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  • The overall aim of the IFRC is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by National Societies with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world.” It works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises.
  • The Federation is served by a Secretariat based in Geneva, with regional, country cluster and country offices throughout the world. The Secretariat’s focus includes providing support to the IFRC governance mechanisms; setting norms and standards; providing guidance; ensuring consistency, coordination, and accountability for performance; knowledge sharing; promoting collaboration within and respect for the RCRC Movement; and expanding engagement with partners.
    [The Secretariat is organized in three main business groups:
  • Partnerships, including Movement and Membership;
  • Programmes and Operations; and (iii) Management Services. The Secretariat’s activities globally are led by five regional offices in; Africa, America’s, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Middle East – North Africa.
  • Africa Region is in turn organized through five regional representations supporting National Societies in Central Africa, Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, West Coast, Sahel and Central Africa as well as eight country representations in Central African Republic (CAR), Ethiopia (AU office), DRC, Niger, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Republic of South Sudan.

    Job Purpose

  • This position in the Africa Regional Office is offered as a professional learning opportunity and to assist the Africa Region
    PSK department in its diverse activities providing back up support.

    Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learn about the Policy, Strategy and Knowledge portfolio of the IFRC and contribute to the overall efficiency of the department.
  • Assist in coordinating amongst PSK team to compile narrative reports, input to Monthly Management Reports, preparing monthly cash forecasts for PSK, and other documents which require feedback/comments from PSK department.
  • Assist in monitoring and following up actively with cluster/countries on small grants project.
  • Assist in liaising with other departments, like Finance, HR, Communications in administrative support.
  • Assist the PSK department in filing and maintaining records of statues, Acts and assist in administrative back up support for the PSK department.
  • Assist in e-contracts and other online assignments which are related to PSK/NSD portfolio.
    Work closely with the members of the PSK department in matters of strengthening IFRC’s NSD capacity in Africa region.
  • Provide timely and reliable input to reports and dashboards requested by the Head of PSK and his designates.

    Education

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree in Social sciences, business management, International relations and any other related discipline

    Experience

  • Fresh Graduate or 1 year experience in humanitarian assistance, volunteers and youth activities
  • Moderate experience in an office working environment.
  • Volunteering or working experience in a RC/RC National Society or another voluntary organisation will be an advantage.

    Knowledge, skills and languages

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a database
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural and busy, demanding environment
  • Computer and software user (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access)
  • Good communicator and team player.
