Context and Background

The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) is an independent non-profit organization that combines innovative research, market systems development, and strategic partnerships to spread sustainable agricultural solutions for improved soil health, food security, and livelihoods around the world.

"Building Resilience and Inclusive Growth of Highland farming systems for rural Transformation" (BRIGHT) will target over 100,000 Ugandan highland households in Kigezi, Mt Elgon, and Rwenzori regions, building project interventions from the ground up that are based on the aspirations and needs of targeted farming households and communities.

BRIGHT seeks to build the resilience capacity of farm households and the farming systems to recover from external shocks in an ever-changing context through absorption, adaptation, and transformation and, in so doing, increase incomes and food and nutritional security of all farmers, from subsistence-oriented farm households to more market-oriented ones.

The proposed project aims to achieve the following main impacts:

  • Increased resilience, nutritional outcomes, and income for smallholder farm households; and

  • Increased eco-efficient farming, making sustainable use of and protecting natural resources

    IFDC is seeking recruitment for Sustainable Land Use and Crop Production Field Officers for this project to be based in the main project office of Fort Portal, Kabale and Mbale field offices.

    Position Summary

  • The Sustainable Land Use and Crop Production Field Officer will support the Sustainable Land Use and Crop Production Lead in the development and refinement of training modules.

  • He/she will conduct trainings to lead farmers on Climate Smart Agriculture, ISFM, landscape restoration including reforestation, and livestock management as part of the farming system and provide backstopping support on the delivery of these trainings.

  • The Sustainable Land Use and Crop Production Field Officer will work closely with the Farmer Household and Farming Systems Field officers to build off the household visioning and collective action, and community mobilization in relation to landscape restoration.

    Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Conduct an assessment of current CSA and SLM practices within highland farming systems to establish focus technical areas

  • Support the implementation of inception phase farming systems and crop selection assessments

  • Participate in research of the needs, review of existing materials and design of training manual for CSA and SLM, including core IFDC approaches such Integrated Soil Fertility Management

  • Conduct ToTs for lead farmers and implementing partners on CSA and SLM

  • Support the effective roll-out of CSA and SLM training to small holder farmers including demonstrations and field days

  • Ensure technical support is provided in the implementation
    of CSA and SLM aspects of integrated farm plans in conjunction with other technical officers

  • Coordinate with local communities, local government and other projects in the identification and implementation of sustainable land management solutions in environmentally fragile landscapes

  • Work closely with other technical officers to develop strategies and interventions that support better access to input markets for crops and livestock

    Supervision and Team Collaboration

  • The Sustainable Land Use and Crop Production Field Officer is supervised by and reports to the Sustainable Land Use and Crop Production Lead.

  • She/ he works in close collaboration with project colleagues, other IFDC staff and colleagues from other consortium members.

    Position and Duty Station

  • The Sustainable Land Use and Crop Production Field Officer is a national position with a duty in the IFDC main project office in Fort Portal or the field offices of Mbale of Kabale.

  • The position requires intensive field travels (up to 90% of the time) in the target region in Uganda.
