About The organization

The IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative builds ambitious public private coalitions of companies, civil society organizations and governments to oversee high-impact programs that directly benefit people, planet and profit.

With co-funding from the Dutch, Swiss and Danish Governments, as well as from business partners, IDH organizes public private partnerships in 11 commodity sectors such as coffee, tea, apparel, cotton and palm oil.

Similarly, IDH also builds sustainable governance models across tropical forest regions, or landscapes and operates in many countries worldwide, including Ethiopia where it currently running a sustainable landscape program at Lake Ziway.

IDH is a dynamic organization with app. 200 staff, of which 70 are based in Utrecht, the Netherlands and the balance in hubs in Asia and Africa.

In the last year IDH has expanded its activities and now runs around 600 projects in 50 countries, together with a wide range of private and public partners.

IDH is looking to support the sustainable development of the Textile Industry in Ethiopia by recruiting a:

Program Manager - Responsible Production

This role is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Position Overview

The labour intensity of the textile industry makes it an ideal vehicle for industrialization. However, the rapid development of Industrial Parks and the urbanization that accompanies it, also have profound implications for living and working conditions of the workers, as well as for the environment.

The Program Manager for Responsible Production (PM-RP) is responsible for working with global textile brands and their local manufacturers to establish best practice environmental performance of the Textile sector in Ethiopia. The objective is that Ethiopia will become internationally recognized for high quality, sustainable production.

In the first instance, this will involve program design as well as identifying suitable partners to build local capacity. Once a baseline has been set, it will be important to design and coordinate the execution of well-defined improvement plans.

Finally, the PM-RP will look to scale the programs by expanding to more brands, manufacturers and geographies.

The PM-RP will be a key team member of the broader IDH team in Ethiopia as well as globally, as part of Global Manufacturing practice.

IDH is a dynamic and growing organization which prides itself on its versatility, speed of response and determination to deliver on its commitments. Likewise, the IDH team both in Ethiopia and the Netherlands will support the IDH PM-RP.

Responsibilities

  • Global Brands: Build strong relationships with the Brands and their suppliers, the Manufacturers. Develop a deep understanding of their needs.
  • Service Providers: Identify and partner with key service providers who bring both technical expertise and training capability.
  • Framework: Work with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition to determine how the Higg
  • Facility Environmental module can be a means to standardized measurement, a common language and therefore a baseline and from which to identify potential improvements.
  • Building capacity: Work with selected partners to develop a training (train the trainer program) to build the capacity for self-assessment at the factory level
  • Roll out: Coordinate and oversee the roll out of both training and assessment process.
    Improvement Program: Having developed a baseline
    covering areas such as resource utilization, water and energy consumption, waste and emissions, work collaboratively to determine an improvement program.
  • Program Delivery: Act as program coordinator and work with partners to resource, fund and execute the improvement program.
  • Second Wave: repeat the cycle (steps 1-7) by identifying a new tranche of manufacturing facilities, establishing a baseline using Higg FEM and subsequently determining an improvement program.
  • Communication: Draw up and execute the communication plan for responsible production, as well as help develop the local “IDH branding”. Actively share information on and promote the efforts and outcomes, which includes developing brochures, website and reports. Represent IDH in national and international events.
  • Strategizing: Work with the team to identify and develop a next iteration of key sustainability projects or replication of successful activities in new geographies, for the program to undertake.

  • Demonstrated success of effectively leading change and organizational growth, from planning through to the delivery of tangible results
  • Evidence of skilled process management and program management
  • Degree level, ideally in relevant disciplines like development economics, industrial development, business management, social sciences, natural sciences
  • At least 5 years’ experience in environmental management
  • Consulting license or accreditation by a professional body in Ethiopia or overseas
  • Neutrality to the extent that there is no factual or perceived conflict with the interests of key stakeholders
  • Track record in raising funding for sustainable development work
  • Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills in Amharic and English
  • Demonstrable personal authority/credibility to convene at a senior level in both public and private sectors
  • Computer literate with experience using Microsoft Office,Internet (familiarity with Salesforce would be an advantage)

    The position is a full time position. The successful applicant will be offered a consultancy contract, with a competitive service fee depending on experience and seniority.

    This role is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Frequent travel to meetings in the capital as well as to the industrial parks and key infrastructure attributes is to be expected, as well as potential international travel within East-Africa and beyond.

    Candidates are based in Ethiopia or should be eligible to obtain permission to work in Ethiopia. IDH will not be in a position to help secure the required work documentation for Ethiopia.
