The Position:

The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry-ICRAF) seeks to recruit ‘Research Officer II – Tree Improvement Officer’.

Job Purpose:

The Tree Improvement Officer will be responsible for planning, coordination and implementation of research and development of seed source description, Breeding Seed Orchards, tree improvement, and seed source development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the planning, coordination and implementation of Breeding Seed Orchards;
  • Development of new ideas, techniques and methodologies for the formulation of criteria and parameters for the identification and selection of plus trees for gene conservation and seed source development;
  • Responsible for collection, processing and storage of data concerning seed source description and Breeding Seed Orchards and prepare project reports and outputs;
  • In collaboration with the Seed Procurement officer and seed source officer, responsible for coordination and monitoring of national seed demand, establishment of seed sources, and seed collection planning implementation;
    Support research in the selection of provenances and populations of natural forests, plantations and farm trees for tree seed collection;
  • Support and take responsibilities in breeding and seed source development program as outlined in the project document and the annual work plans;
  • Contributes in proposal development and assist in the preparation of extension and training manuals for seed collectors, seed centers and forest enterprises;
  • Assist and participate in the training of major stakeholders;
  • Management of financial and physical resources of the project.
  • Participate in the further development and implementation of PATSPOs seed source development in Ethiopia
  • Express resourceful decision-making experience; having impact on the physical and financial
    operation of PATSPO;
  • Demonstrate problem solving ability in complex situation concerning gene conservation, tree improvement and seed source development.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education

  • A minimum of MSc degree in tree improvement/breeding. PhD in tree improvement/breeding is a plus.

    Skills:

  • Excellent writer and communicator;
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills in an international environment;
  • Excellent persuasive communication, organizational and documentation skills;
  • Ability to prioritize important/urgent activities and handle multiple tasks;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on agreed priorities and deliverable;
  • Ability to work under pressure with high accuracy and to meet deadlines;
  • Fluency in English and Amharic, working knowledge of other Ethiopian language is advantageous.

    Experience:

  • 5 years of relevant experience in theoretical and practical aspects of tree improvement, including field work and field establishments;
  • Experience in forestry research and development in Ethiopia is highly desirable;
  • Ability to think strategically to develop and implement tree improvement/gene conservation/seed procurement plans;
  • Experience to present and package scientific information into various formats to suit specialist and non-specialist audiences, scientific articles and practical guidelines.
