    Overall purpose of the job

The Behavioural and Chemical Ecology Unit (BCEU) conducts research leading to the identification, formulation and evaluation of pheromones, kairomones, and allomones for use in the integrated management of pest populations to improve plant health (e.g. above- and below-ground crop pests, including invasive alien species), animal health (such as tsetse flies, biting flies and ticks of livestock), human health (disease vectors, such as mosquitoes and sandflies), and environmental health (pests of bees).

Research is also conducted to: increase
    populations of beneficial insects,

including natural enemies of these pests; establish the effect of abiotic and biotic stresses on pollinators, such as honeybees and stingless bees; and use of insects for food and feed.

The Unit is well equipped with various analytical chemistry instruments, including volatile collection systems (VCS), gas
chromatographs (GCs), coupled gachromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) system, GCmass spectrometer (GC-MS), and various liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry equipment (e.g. liquid
chromatography-triple quadrupole LC-QQQ; liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight LC-TOF, and LCsingle quadrupole.

BCEU is also equipped with various instruments to study insect behaviour. Capacity building
