icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications.

Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.

Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has
become a significant contributor to science and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa.

The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.

icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Benin, Ethiopia and Uganda,
and with a major field station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Ethiopia and Kenya.

The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations across the world.

Employing over 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually.

icipe seeks to recruit a Senior Business Support Officer I (Project Accountant) in the Finance Unit.

The position is tenable in Nairobi at the icipe Duduville campus.

This is two-year contract, renewable subject to continued project needs, funding for the position, and performance of the staff member.

This is a nationally recruited position.

Overall Purpose of the Job

  • The position holder will be responsible for the financial management of a portfolio of grants.

    Specific Duties

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Create new projects in the institutional financial systems.

  • Review and approve project expenses, ensuring proper classification and adherence to the
    approved budget.

  • Provide guidance and advice on financial management to research departments.

  • Support and guide project teams in monitoring the budget, analysing project financial
    performance, interpreting financial reports, and identifying and evaluating new financial
    strategies.

  • Ensure compliance with icipe financial policies and donor requirements in the implementation of projects.

  • Prepare financial reports in conformity with donor requirements and submit them in a timely
    manner.

  • Support initiatives towards enhancing financial management processes for improved service delivery and performance.

  • Facilitate periodic project audits.

  • Provide financial oversight to icipe country offices.

  • Support country office heads in budget preparation.

  • Ensure that financial and administrative procedures are in place, and that they comply with icipestandards.

  • Ensure that internal controls are established and applied consistently.

  • Review country office financial reports for completeness and accuracy.

  • Regularly review partner financial reports for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

    Requirements/ Qualifications]

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Economics, or related subject.

  • Professional accountancy qualifications (CPA, ACCA or equivalent membership of an internationally recognised professional accounting institute).

  • At least three years of post-professional experience in project accounting.

    Core Competencies

  • Ability to study and interpret documents (rules, regulations, manuals, and policies) in attending to tasks.

    Other Desirable Attributes

  • Experience in auditing or financial management.

    Reporting

    This position reports to the Finance Specialist.
