    Preamble

    icipe seeks to recruit an Assistant Artisan (Plumber) in the Facilities and Assets Unit, Mbita Workshop. The position is tenable in Mbita, at the icipe Thomas Odhiambo campus.

    The position is for an initial fixed-term of 2 years, renewable, based on performance and availability of funds.

    icipe—International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology—is a world-class research centre with a mission to alleviate poverty by ensuring food security, improving health, protecting the environment and building the capacity of researchers and communities across the developing world through the application of insect sciences.

    Employing close to 500 national and international staff, icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with outposts in Ethiopia and on the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya.

    research capacity.

    The Centre’s research activities span the African continent with partnerships linking research organisations, not only across Africa, but also the globe.

    In addition, 100–150 graduate students and a number of postdoctoral fellows contribute to icipe’s research portfolio annually.

    The position is tenable at the icipe Thomas Odhiambo Campus in Mbita, South Nyanza, and is available to commence immediately.

    The position will be offered for an initial contract of 3 years, renewable subject to continued project needs, funding for the position, and performance of the staff member.

    A competitive and generous compensation package that includes comprehensive health and life insurance cover (all payable in US Dollars) will be offered to the right candidate.

    annual vacation, return airfare for themselves and their dependents to their nominated home base each year, and duty-free privileges. If the successful candidate is appointed from outside Kenya, he or she will be offered
    support to relocate and settle in Mbita.

    icipe Thomas Odhiambo Campus (ITOC) is situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, with excellent housing facilities for staff and students.

    The Campus sits on 24.5 hectares of land, 40% of which consists of experimental
    fields and buildings with landscaped gardens.

    ITOC’s research structures include state-of-the-art laboratories and offices, as well

    as insect and animal rearing facilities. The Campus also hosts St. Jude’s Clinic, a kindergarten, primary school, and the Mbita Guest House.

    Overall Purpose of the Job

    The job holder will be responsible for installation, repairs, maintaining pipes, fixtures, domestic water treatment
    and distribution and irrigation. He will also be required to carry out carpentry services such as repairs, wood fittings and joinery.

    Specific Duties

    Plumbing:

  • Carrying out routine maintenance, servicing and repair of all pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications ensuring they are operational at all times.
  • Conducting first and second fix plumbing works on new constructions/remodeling work, undertaking various plumbing practices or techniques, including use of different plumbing materials etc.
  • Assembling pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, and plastic solvent.
  • Maintaining all equipment in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.
  • Inspecting, maintaining and correctly using PPE specific to the task.
  • Keeping work site/workshop tidy at all times, especially at the end of each shift or working day.
  • Responsible for the use of materials and tools issued for the task, including the safe storage and security, protection from the elements and returning un-used materials to the store. Undertaking regular inspections
    and re-stocking.
  • Using both power and manual tools.
  • Advising senior colleagues on alternative techniques or practices that would give better value for money.
  • Providing work direction and guidance to other laborers.

  • ASSISTANT ARTISAN (PLUMBER)

  • Interpreting blueprints and drawings to determine specifications and to calculate the materials required.
  • Providing for proper materials as necessary to accomplish work orders;
  • Preparing and maintaining records (including labor, materials and work orders completed).
  • Receiving instructions from the supervisor.
  • Assisting in performing other maintenance duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
    Carpentry:
  • Wood-fittings and wood-works in the buildings including doors, windows, frames and roof trusses.
  • Joinery, as well as fabrication of all types of furniture and wood-fittings.
  • Cutting and fitting all window glasses.
  • Roofing, including fixing of all types of roofing materials (iron sheets, transparent glass, fibre sheets, clay and cement tiles).
  • Painting and refurbishing office spaces and common areas.
  • Maintenance of furniture in residential, offices and laboratories.
  • Assisting in masonry section.
  • Preparing estimates and quotations for carpentry, masonry and painting works.

    Requirements/Qualifications

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education
  • Five years’ experience in plumbing and Carpentry
  • GoK Trade Test Grade III

    Core Competencies

  • To work in other areas of the maintenance sections to provide support during absences or shortage of staff in other trades or to perform duties associated with light construction projects.
  • Experience in plumbing and water works.
  • Firefighting and first aid.
  • Proficient in carpentry works.
  • Knowledge in masonry and painting work.
  • Basic computer skills.

    Other Desirable Attributes

  • Flexibility and understanding that all maintenance staff may be required to perform duties outside their normal area of expertise when need arises.

    Reporting

  • This position reports to the Farm/Estates Supervisor.
