Human Rights Watch Deputy Program Director Jobs in Kenya;The Deputy Program Director will provide strategic leadership, supervision, and operational oversight of HRW’s research divisions. The role requires deep knowledge of international human rights, research methodologies, and advocacy, with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and staff well‑being. The Deputy Program Director will oversee four research divisions, facilitate programmatic implementation of HRW’s global strategy, and contribute to organizational leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Manage divisional directors and support staff globally.

  • Model inclusive leadership and promote diversity and belonging.

  • Oversee financial management of research divisions.

  • Support staff resilience and work/life balance.

  • Promote an inclusive, positive work environment.

    Strategy & Innovation

  • Oversee development of divisional strategies and operational plans.

  • Ensure clear goals, benchmarks, and alignment with HRW priorities.

  • Facilitate intra‑organizational strategy meetings and implementation.

    Systems for Effective Work

  • Facilitate information flow across divisions.

  • Ensure consistency in research, fact‑checking, and ethical standards.

  • Support effective cross‑divisional collaboration.

    Partnerships

  • Strengthen sustainable relationships with external human rights partners.

  • Promote visibility and recognition of partnership work.

    Quality Control

  • Oversee high standards of research, writing, and fact‑checking.

  • Review divisional outputs for effectiveness and compliance.

    Security

  • Work with Security team to design and implement protocols.

  • Review and approve security plans and respond to emerging issues.

    Additional Responsibilities

  • Cultivate relationships with HRW leadership and
    staff.

  • Undertake special projects and cross‑departmental initiatives.

  • Participate in fundraising activities.

    Qualifications

    Education

  • Advanced degree in international relations, law, journalism, social sciences, or related field (or equivalent experience).

    Experience

  • Minimum 12 years’ relevant experience in international human rights or related work.

  • At least 5 years in a management role.

    Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of international human rights law and humanitarian law.

  • Proven track record in research, advocacy, and collaboration.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and fact‑checking skills.

  • High emotional intelligence and ability to manage senior managers.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and staff well‑being.

  • Ability to deliver measurable results and manage complex projects.

    Preferred Experience

  • Work experience in the United States or Latin America.

  • Experience cultivating interdisciplinary collaboration.
