Job Purpose:

  • The Manager Collections & Workouts is accountable for leading the Credit Collections team to ensure that collection targets are
    achieved and that cases are handled appropriately and in accordance with the Bank’s Credit Policy and Procedures.

  • He/she will oversee a team of collection staff members, support relationship management teams and engage directly with customers who have credit facilities with the Bank who may be experiencing repayment challenges with a view to increasing and maintaining the percentage of successful repayments of such facilities.

    Key Result Areas

  • Accountable for providing strategic support to Management on all aspects relating to the sustenance of an effective credit collections and workouts effort in the Bank. This entails keeping abreast with industry
    developments, collections and asset quality trends and proactively;

  • Identify, manage and provide advice in collection & workouts with HFB distressed and defaulted exposures.

    This will include;

  • Supervising recovery & remedial activities in the bank.

  • Reviewing of memorandum and non-performing credit facility databases to inform collection activities.

  • Ensuring restructuring of non-performing credit facilities into performing status & early resolution of problem facilities and fraud related accounts.

  • Oversee the collection & workout of outstanding credit facilities to minimize credit loss while ensuring it is handled appropriately in line with the Bank’s policy;

  • Plan and coordinate activities of staff in the department to ensure a smooth and efficient Collections & Workouts unit;

  • Create and implement strategies to increase the number of successful collections on outstanding credit facilities;

  • Train and evaluate the performance of staff in the Collections & Workouts unit to ensure acceptable levels of productivity and
    performance;

  • Develop collections targets that complement the overarching business goals of the Bank and coordinate collections staff to continually meet and exceed these targets.

  • Prepare reports and analyse data pertaining to the collections performance of the credit portfolio and share outputs and
    recommendations with EXCO and all other credit value chain stakeholders as may be needed.

  • Develop and implement credit policies and procedures that retain a smooth running of the collections & workouts unit.

  • Plan, organize and document proceedings of credit monitoring & collections committee meetings.

  • Carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the Chief Credit Officer or Management.

    Financial Responsibility

    • Responsible for the Collections & Workouts unit targets as will be agreed from time to time especially in areas of net recoveries vs
    budget, efficiency of loan recovery effort (cost of recovery as
    a % of remedial loan balance recovered), proficiency on coordinating the restructuring and workout of problem loans, effectiveness in managing the activities of remedial management and collections made on
    restructured accounts.

    • Responsible for avoiding any regulatory & other penalties relating to Collections & Workouts.

    Person specifications

    Education & Training


    • A Business Bachelor’s degree in Risk, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, Economics, Statistics, management, Law or any
    relevant field from a recognised University or Institution.

    • Possession of a Certified banking qualification or master’s degree in a relevant field would be an added advantage.

    • Relevant practical training in Collections & Workouts in the financial services sector

    Skills & Experience

    • A minimum of 5 years in a Collections environment for a financial institution with at least 3 of these years being in charge of a
    Collections & Workouts unit.

    • Good understanding of Collections & Workouts Management principles.

    • Thorough understanding of the evolving practices for the management of Collections & Workouts and regulatory requirements.

    • Capable of professional discussions with internal and external stakeholders.

    • Able to source data, perform periodic computations & report on findings.

    • Able to show awareness of and access to key collections stakeholders in the financial services sector

    • Ability to build functioning working relationships across organizational,
    corporate, and cultural boundaries.
