Job Summary

HIAS operation in Kenya was established in 2002 with the mission to serve the most vulnerable refugees through protection, resilience, economic inclusion and provision of durable solutions.

HIAS seeks to recruit Matron/Nurses who will ensure that the Accommodation Centre provides high quality, dignified services with due regard to residents safety and ensuring individual, holistic care throughout but not limited to performing the following duties:

Welfare

  • Liaising closely with relevant staff concerning the welfare of clients;
  • Identify, address and report all residents’ concerns to the Centre Manager
  • Contributing to the induction of new residents so as to provide the highest standards of care;
  • Ensure cleanliness and tidiness of both the House and residents;
  • Inspect the rooms from time to time and check on the general cleanliness, any peculiar habits, and/or report on anything outside the usual norm.
  • Issuing of monthly non-food items to clients
  • Conflict resolution amongst clients
  • Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to clients.
  • Oversee cleaning staff time sheets

    Health and Medical Arrangements

  • Referring medical matters for specialized care when appropriate
  • Responding to medical emergencies and offering first aid services
  • Monitoring immunizations for children as per KEPI schedule
  • Carrying out medical screening during intake of clients
  • Attend to minor medical cases at the safe house
  • Accompanying residents to routine medical appointments
  • Follow up appointments for clients attending special clinics such as diabetic clinic, comprehensive care clinic, pediatric clinic
  • Ensuring proper documentation, maintaining proper records , confidentiality
  • Liaises with kitchen department for special diet requirements for clients with specific medical conditions and children under five years
  • Promotes an environment which maximizes
    client’s safety by utilizing infection control practices and patients’ safety programs.
  • Administering any prescription medication in accordance with the doctors’ guidelines.

    Communication and Record keeping

  • Ensure that appropriate, accurate, and up-to-date written records and reports are kept and communications made to concerned parties,
  • Take responsibility for requisitioning stocks for personal hygiene packs;
  • Maintenance of store balances of the same, controlling bedding and linen inventories,
  • Supervising laundry dispatch and receipt and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be required

    Job specifications
  • Qualified nurse with a sound knowledge of the management of outbreaks, of common diseases.
  • Must be a registered nurse with the nursing council of Kenya

    Skills & Competencies
  • At least 2 years of work experience as a matron or nurse, former experience with humanitarian organizations is an added advantage
  • Good computer skills (Word, Excel).
  • Significant knowledge in conducting trainings and health talks.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Swahili
  • Experience in working with refugees is an added advantage
