Purpose of the Job

  • To lead effective community development activities of Hilfswerk der Evangelischen Kirchen Schweiz (HEKS) in Borana Zone (Oromia Region of Ethiopia) through community mobilization, capacity building and quality reporting.

  • The Community Worker will report to the Borana Field Office Coordinator and closely work with HEKS technical team, project staff and partners.

    Key Responsibilities

  • To carry out and facilitate the day-to-day planning, implementation and monitoring of project activities at community level;

  • To work with customary institutions, project team and government counterparts to achieve the project outputs/outcomes;

  • To ensure adequate consultation and participation of district and kebele level stakeholders in project implementation including monitoring of the activities;

  • To facilitate capacity building trainings and workshops for community representatives and stakeholders at kebele level;

  • To facilitate various kebele level community meetings, including monthly rangeland council meetings;

  • To support and engage community in various kebele based natural resource rehabilitation initiatives;

  • To take part in the assessments and surveys within the project operational area for project planning and management;

  • To ensure transparent and legitimate beneficiary selection is conducted at community level;

  • To acquire accurate information about selected beneficiaries’ families, their problems, needs and capabilities and share these with the project management team;

  • To act as facilitator to promote self-help and other social groups in the community;

  • To participate in planning, coordination meetings and other events at kebele level;

  • To prepare and develop periodic reports and weekly progress updates in standard and quality manner;

  • To ensure proper recording and documentation of best practices, lessons and
    success stories;

  • To ensure that project activities are implemented according to project work-plan;

  • To work in line with the organizational code of conduct, organizational policies and guidelines;

  • To carry out other assignments and tasks as may be assigned by the Field Office Coordinator and Project Officer.

    Education/Qualifications

    Essentials

  • BSc or Diploma in Natural Resources Management, Range land Management and other related fields

    Experience

    Essentials

  • 2 -3 years’ work experience in integrated watershed management and rangeland management projects in lowland pastoralist areas

  • Experience and understanding of Borana pastoral areas, context, livelihoods and culture

  • Experience of working with local community and customary institutions at grassroots level
    Willingness to reside in rural/marginal areas, and ability to work with minimum supervision

  • Experience of organizing and conducting trainings and workshops at different levels

  • Strong understanding of social development and gender issues

    Desirables

  • Experience in NGO work

  • Experience in working across cultures and themes
