Heifer Kenya Consultancy to Establish Kitchen Gardens and CSA Demo Plots


Overall Objective

  • The general objective for the establishment of kitchen gardens is to disseminate dryland resilience vegetable technologies for improved household nutrition and income for poultry farmers. Of interest in the establishment of vegetables for kitchen gardens shall be both exotic and indigenous vegetables; i.e. kales, common & giant nightshade, spider plant and jute mallow. The project will engage the Producer Organizations (POs) leadership to identify demonstration sites for the establishment of Kitchen gardens.

  • Each PO will identify 4 locations that will be used as centres for practical learning on kitchen garden establishment by poultry farmers to improve their household nutrition.

    Specific Objectives

  • Establish 250 kitchen garden demonstration plots that will be planted with various assorted of seeds, with at least 4 types of vegetable both exotic and local. The Community Facilitators will help to identify 4 demo sites per PO. The demos shall be established under the supervision of the partners i.e. Agricultural Officers from various sub-counties where the POs are situated.

  • All demo plots established will use organic manure mostly from poultry with minimal use of the pesticides for control of pests that are likely to attack the vegetables at different growth stages.

  • The target of 250 demonstration plots shall be implemented in two phases, with Phase 1 of this assignment targeting 100 demo plots and the balance of 150 in phase 2. Phase 2 of this assignment shall be based on satisfactory completion and success rate of demonstration plots established in Phase1.

  • It’s anticipated that this work, upon signing of the contract, Phase 1 activities shall commence on 1st October 2020 to take advantage of the short rain period Oct-Nov-Dec 2020 period and phase 2 to follow at the beginning of the long rains March-Apr-May 2021.

    Scope of Work

  • Map out (using GPS) the 100 demonstration sites in the four Counties of Homabay, Migori Kisumu and Siaya.

  • Establish 100 plots, each 5 strips of 1mX10m size, with assorted vegetable varieties, during the short rains, Oct-Dec 2020 and the balance of 150 during the long rains, Mar-May 2021.

  • Provide onsite capacity training of 125 community Facilitators on Agronomic practices for vegetable production.

  • Develop and share in hard and soft copies of kitchen garden vegetable production handbook.

  • Undertake post-establishment monitoring of the demonstration sites and submit a progress report to the HHK Project management.

    Responsibilities of the Consultant

  • Mapping and documentation of the demonstration sites.

  • Procurement of demonstration inputs (vegetable seeds).

  • Design and establishment of the demonstration plots.

  • Onsite training of 125 Community facilitators

  • Development of kitchen garden handbook (Hard and soft copies).

  • Prepare a comprehensive report after the conclusion of the exercise.

  • Prepare post establishment monitoring report, one month after completion of the assignments.

    Responsibilities of Heifer

  • Facilitate identification of demonstration sites with 25partner producer organization in the four counties of Homabay, Migori, Kisumu and Siaya.

  • Facilitate mobilization of CFs for onsite training and participation in the establishment of demo-plots.

  • In liaison with the respective County Agriculture officers, organize for at least 1 field day in each County for learning purposes and dissemination of the agricultural practices to more farmers in the Community.

  • Processing of the payment for the consultancy assignment on submission of the activity report.

  • Be available for consultation as needed.

    Supervision and Coordination

  • The successful applicant will work under
    the direct supervision of the Livestock Production Officer and the HHK Project Manager. The Director of Programs will provide overall assignment oversight.

  • The consultant under the duration of the contract will also work closely with the technical project teams.

  • It should be noted that all information and reports collected in the process of undertaking this exercise shall be the property of Heifer International

    The Application Requirements

    Only legally registered entities are eligible to apply and should submit the following:

  • Letter of expression of interest and demonstration of capability

  • Cover page (Name of Organization/company, contact details – the name of the contact person, physical address, phone number, and email address)

  • A technical proposal detailing your understanding and how you propose to undertake the assignment and work plan. Include at least three previous clients and their contacts to act as references and CVs of the person (s) to be engaged on the assignment

  • Financial proposal – applicants should submit a detailed budget in excel format with budget notes that explain the basis of the estimate for each line item (in USD and Kshs)

    Other documents to be attached to the application should include;

  • Copy of the Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Certificate

  • KRA PIN Certificate – Consultancy firm.

    NB

    The successful firm will be required to produce the following documents before entering into Independent Contractor Agreement (ICA) with Heifer Project International.

  • Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Certificate.

  • A Partnership Deed if you are running a partnership business.

  • Audited financial statements for the last three years.

  • Valid CR12 Certificate

  • KRA online PIN Certificate.

  • Tax Compliance Certificate.

  • Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Certificate.

  • Physical location including town, building, room number and postal address.

  • Directors’ / Partners’ personal guarantee.

  • Trade reference and clientele list including their respective contacts.

    How to Apply

  • Interested local firms legally eligible to implement this assignment in Kenya are requested to submit a proposal.

  • Please include the name of the person(s) in your organization who will be involved in negotiating the contract as well as your telephone and email contact information.

  • Submissions must be in English and typed single-spaced using Times New Roman font size 12, with a complete set of appendices/attachments as applicable. All pages must be numbered and include the SOW reference number in the cover page, and name of the organization at the bottom of each page.

  • The proposal (duly signed) from only firms should comprise technical and financial proposal.

    Late Submission and Modifications

  • Proposals received after the submission deadline will not be considered. Offerors are responsible to ensure their proposals are submitted according to the instructions stated herein.
