Job Description

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a world leading organization committed to the treatment and reintegration of patients suffering from Obstetric Fistula and the training and deployment of qualified midwives to prevent Obstetric Fistula and other child birth injuries.

HFE is founded in 1974 by Drs Catherine and Reginald Hamlin has been caring for the women of Ethiopia for almost 60 years. As well as our main hospital in Addis Ababa we also have 5 regional hospitals, rehabilitation, and reintegration center and a midwifery college.

We also deploy midwives into rural health centers across the country and provide mentoring and other support services to these facilities.

The Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia would like to invite potential applicants for the following positions:

Job Summary/Basic Function

The CEO will lead the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) organization, consisting of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, its 5 regional Treatment Centers, the Hamlin College of Midwives and ‘Desta Mender’ (rehabilitation and vocational site), on behalf of the Board of Trustees, ensuring that the Trust can fulfill its objectives as described in the Deed of Trust and ensuring that the Trust maintains the culture and spirit of patient care established by the Founders, Drs. Reginald and Catherine Hamlin.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To support the Board of Trustees by ensuring that the HFE organization has a secure future with the necessary policies, governance systems, human resource planning, training and strong financial planning and risk management.
  • To protect and maintain into the future the culture of tender care for which the organization is renowned.

    Strategic leadership/management

  • To lead the HFE organization in provision of tender care for poor women with childbirth injuries.
  • To ensure excellence of training for and deployment of midwives and healthcare workers.
  • To develop and update, as required, the Strategic Plan and detailed objectives for the
  • Trust and present this to the Board of Trustees for approval.
  • To develop annual plan, budget and performance metrics for the Trust, and present these, including regular updates, for approval to the Board of Trustees.
  • To lead, motivate and strengthen the senior management team and the whole organization in achieving the objectives and goals put forward in the Strategic Plan.
  • To innovate and develop, with the senior management team, improved systems and methodologies for achieving key objectives and meeting challenges.
  • To ensure the Human resource management, procurement and financial management of the organization is undertaken in accordance with the national rules, guidelines and declarations.
  • To identify other innovative sources of funds/income and raise additional resources to the institution.
  • Provide guidance to deputy CEO on day to day operations and management, who will be responsible for the day to day management and operation of HFE

    Reporting Requirements

  • To report to the Board of Trustees
    at regular intervals concerning the financial and strategic activities/performance of HFE in general and the hospital, midwifery school and ‘Desta’ Mender patient rehabilitation center in particular.
  • To report to Charities and Societies Agency, other government bodies, partners and donors.

    Partnership

  • To work towards leading and strengthening the relationship of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia with its partner Hamlin Fistula Trusts around the world and support them in their fundraising activities.
  • To present the organization to and network with the Federal Ministry of Health, Regional Health Bureaus and other NGO’s that are involved in activities that promote improved maternal health in Ethiopia.
  • To ensure excellence of communication, including financial reporting, with stakeholders nationally and internationally with the knowledge of the chair of the Board of Trustees.

    Regulatory compliance

  • To work to ensure that the organization is compliant with all local and national laws and regulation for the operation of charitable Trusts, academics and hospital.

    Job Requirements

    Minimum Education

  • Master’s degree level in relevant field of health management, management and/or social science fields, or a strong proven track record in all of the below.

    Minimum Experience

  • 10 years of (senior) management experience in health and/or other sectors, similar administration position, experience in fundraising and working in multi-donor supported institutions/programs.

  • Proven leadership skills in a complex organization, including strategy setting, financial planning and execution.
  • Excellent team working skills, with an ability to work flexibly and adapt to emerging issues, priorities and demands.
  • Proven ability to manage, motivate, and mentor staff at all levels and create a positive team environment.
  • An ability to effectively manage resources and oversee effective financial management and corporate governance systems in a similarly sized organization.
  • Experience in leading an organization that commissions academic and/or clinical research and an ability to adapt an organization’s strategy in response to research outcomes.
  • Personal commitment and resilience and an ability to cope with the competing demands and challenges of this role, including the flexibility and willingness to deal with issues outside or normal office hours.
  • A demonstrable ability to communicate clearly and confidently in English and Amharic, verbally and in writing, to represent the trust to partners and external bodies.

    Desirable Experience

  • An understanding of Maternal Health Care in Ethiopia.
  • Experience working in Ethiopia or in other countries in the Global South.
  • Experience in leading or being part of leadership of an international not-for-profit or non-governmental organization.
