Green Way Farms is currently seeking a professional, high-performance individual to serve as Nursery Officer.

This individual will have the unique opportunity to help shape the future of a young, environmentally, and socially-conscious agriculture business in Ethiopia, one of Africa’s most promising economies.

Ideal candidates have a passion for East Africa, a dedication to environmental sustainability, and the ability to successfully support the company’s horticulture production efforts as the company scales over the next 5 years to produce more than 500 tons of produce annually with several hundred partner farmers.

Background

Green Way Farms is a socially-oriented agribusiness that produces organic produce in an environmentally-sustainable, organic manner in conjunction with a network of smallholder farmers.

The company currently operates from its Butajira Production Area with a team of 70 staff and 100+ Partner Farmers. Green Way maintains a facility (the Farmer Service Center) with a cold store, nursery, and packhouse in Butajira, SNNPR. The company exports regularly to Amsterdam, London, and Dubai.

As a young, but growing company, GreenPath will develop new facilities and expand to at least one new production areas in the next 9 months with a vision to become East Africa’s largest organic specialty food company.

This position may have the opportunity to establish and run the company's new nursery site as it expands.

The Senior Staff at the organization are a group of highly talented professionals with experience in Ethiopian export horticulture, and agricultural development sectors, as well as direct experience in the Ethiopian start-up context.

Mission of Role

To efficiently produce, procure, sell,
and distribute the highest quality organic seeds, seedlings and inputs to farmers in line with GreenPath’s agronomy schedule and the needs of our Partner Farmers

Responsibilities & Outcomes

Input Procurement, Production & Sales

  • 80,000 seedlings are produced and ready for sale to farmers every month in line with GreenPath’s agronomy schedule and the needs of our Partner Farmers
  • Seedling production areas remain in line with EU Organic standards at all times
    Seed/seedling propagation areas remain well maintained and in good working order at all times
  • A pool of daily laborers are identified, well-managed, and available for work at the nursery
  • Relevant seeds and other production inputs are procured and in place at the nursery two weeks prior to the date they are needed
  • At least 80% of all seeds or seedlings planted at the nursery site successfully mature and are sold
  • An accurate, detailed understanding of the finances of nursery activities are always present so that the nursery is equipped to operate as a nearly stand alone business.
  • Ensure other inputs (i.e. compost) and materials (i.e. rain barrels, clippers) that may be sold/lent out to partner farmers are present in adequate quantities and available for sale to farmers

    Job Requirements

    Required Competencies

  • Experienced and comfortable living in a small Ethiopian town like Butajira
  • Knowledge of Ethiopian fruit and vegetable industry
  • Able to read, write, and speak in English and Amharic (Afan Oromo and/or Guragigna preferred, but not required)

    Required Experience

  • Experience working in a well-established nursery with seed/seedling propagation for at least 2 years
  • Experience serving in a management role for at least 6 months
  • Experience working with computers

    Preferred Experience

  • Experience working at an early-stage organisation.
  • Experience with financial management systems.
  • Experience establishing seed beds, seedling tables, irrigation systems, etc.
  • Experience with organic agriculture
