About the Role

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking a Senior Associate, Youth Projects to support the global management and strategic direction of the youth projects programme as well as operational duties in Tanzania.

This role will be offered on a 3 years’ fixed-term contract basis, subject to availability of funding. You will be based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Reporting to the Theme Lead, Inclusive and Equitable Food Systems, the Senior Associate will work closely with the Head of Programmes, Tanzania and Global Theme Lead to provide functional and technical support to projects and teams in the Nourishing Food Pathways (NFP) youth project (global and country activities).

You will be responsible for day-to-day operational delivery, implementation, and monitoring of the project in Tanzania and you will ensure project activities are implemented within approved plans, budget, and quality standards.

As this is a new thematic work area for GAIN Tanzania, the postholder will help guide the office on how to work with youth and establish a presence for GAIN on youth and food systems in Tanzania.

You will work with a high performing cross-functional and cross-country project team, and establish, manage and maintain relationships with relevant partners and stakeholders. In addition, the postholder will contribute to a greater staff understanding of how to work with youth in GAIN’s work, providing guidance to the project team and other GAIN staff on youth engagement in food.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic support to country teams in the design, planning and implementation of the new NFP youth project. Collaborating with the GAIN colleagues, consultants and partners on the design and planning of project scope, activities, work plans, Theories of Change and results framework

  • Supporting the Theme Lead to define a youth engagement and co-creation approach for the project to support youth contribution to food systems policy

  • Contributing to donors’ report writing, in collaboration with project teams, technical teams, funding team and support teams. Ensuring narrative reporting and financial accounting meet GAIN and donor’s requirements

  • Collaborating with the Theme Lead to further refine GAIN’s offering on youth to develop a longer-term strategy with key activities, in particular healthy school food environments

  • Actively contributing to Programme Service Team (PST) department wide initiatives and providing guidance to GAIN Tanzania on positioning of youth in food systems

  • Working closely with partners to ensure their opinions and voices
    are reflected and they can campaign alongside GAIN. Developing and maintaining networks with partners both in the Global North and Global South, including proactively engaging and reaching out to potential partners

  • Driving internal and external awareness of GAIN’s food systems for youth work (including dissemination of project activities and findings, communications assets, working papers and other publications on GAIN’s work) as required, represent GAIN at government and donor meetings, technical groups and seminars / conferences.

  • Working alongside the policy team and Theme Lead to design and deliver a global influencing agenda

    About You

    The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience in youth programming in Tanzania and other countries and working with officials from the Government of Tanzania, civil society organisations including youth organisations, and school networks.

    You will have proven experience in managing and delivering projects on time / on budget, using project management, processes and tools including risk management, benefits management, financial management and quality assurance project management. Candidates with experience in food systems or nutrition programming would be an asset.

    The postholder will also have a good understanding of nutrition and food systems concepts in programmes and policy, in addition to current food systems trends and youth priorities, and able to identify knowledge and practice gaps.

    You will have strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills, including a proven ability to communicate diverse and disparate information and messaging in simple and concise formats. In addition to this, you will possess fluent written and spoken English and Kiswahili. You will be highly flexible and willing and able to travel internationally regularly.

    The ideal candidate will have familiarity with meaningful youth engagement, human-centered design and social behaviour change communications approaches within an international context across multiple countries. A Post graduate degree or equivalent in Youth Studies, Community Development, Economics, Nutrition, Sociology, Development, or related field is preferrable.
