Job Description/Requirements

  • Administering Intravenous Treatments: The primary responsibility of an infusion nurse is to administer intravenous medications, fluids, other treatments to patients. They carefully assess patients' needs, review physician orders, prepare medications, set up and maintain the IV lines, and monitor patients' responses during the infusion process.

  • Patient Assessment: Infusion nurses conduct thorough assessments of patients prior to starting any treatment. This includes reviewing medical histories, evaluating vital signs, assessing vein conditions, and identifying any potential risks or contraindications. They also monitor patients throughout the infusion process, observing for any adverse reactions or complications.

  • IV Line Insertion and Maintenance: Infusion nurses are skilled in inserting and maintaining IV lines. They select appropriate veins, use aseptic techniques to prevent infections, and ensure proper positioning and securement of the IV catheters. They also monitor the IV site for any signs of complications, such as infection, infiltration, or phlebitis.

  • Medication and Fluid Management: Infusion nurses are responsible for accurately calculating and preparing medications and fluids for administration. They must have a comprehensive understanding of various drugs, their dosages, and potential side effects. They ensure the proper storage, handling, and disposal of medications, adhering to safety protocols and regulatory guidelines.

  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Infusion nurses maintain detailed and accurate patient records, documenting medication administration, dosages, vital signs, and any observed reactions or changes in condition. They also communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, pharmacists, and other members
    of the care team, to coordinate patient care.

They ensure that patients understand the treatment plan, the importance of medication adherence, and the signs and symptoms to report.

  • Adherence to Safety Standards: Infusion nurses adhere to strict infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene, aseptic technique, and the use of personal protective equipment. They are knowledgeable about safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials, sharps, and biohazard waste. They also stay updated on the latest evidence-based practices and guidelines related to infusion therapy.
