Gabo Foundation’s Short Story Contest for Girls and Boys



Submissions are now open for the Short Story Contest for Girls and Boys to discover the incredible stories of people who have left a giant mark in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Theme

  • The central theme of the contest is: “our heroes and heroines”. It seeks to highlight, promote and publicize the stories of those who with their actions have forged or contributed to the consolidation of the identity, autonomy and integration of Ibero-America and the Caribbean, from different aspects or facets.

  • The interest in investigating and telling the role of women and that of the indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples of Ibero-America and the Caribbean will be positively valued.

    Prize Details

  • The contest will reward 20 stories, taking into account the established judging and awarding methodology. The prizes consist of:

  • A face-to-face meeting of a formative, cultural and recreational nature in the Colombian Caribbean. The meeting will be a pedagogical-cultural journey through significant places in the life and work of Gabriel García Márquez. It is planned to visit Cartagena de Indias, Barranquilla and Aracataca (Gabo's hometown).

  • The prize covers all accommodation, food and transportation expenses, from the place of residence to the Colombian Caribbean, of all the winners and a companion (father, mother or legal guardian).

  • The winning stories will be published in a book as an anthology, in digital and physical format (printed edition), which will be freely distributed by the Gabo Foundation and CAF
    - Development Bank of Latin America.

  • A strategy to promote and disseminate the winning stories through the digital communication channels of the Gabo Foundation and CAF - development bank of Latin America.

    Who can participate in the contest?

  • Boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 13, nationals and residents of the member countries of CAF - Development Bank of Latin America, may participate: Argentina, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.

  • Those who participate may compete with an unpublished story, written in Spanish, Portuguese or English.

  • Work carried out collectively or anonymously will not be accepted. Each Contestant may present only one story.

  • Papers will be received in word, pdf, jpg or png format. If the story is a manuscript, photographs or scanned sheets are accepted. It is recommended that manuscripts be fully legible.
