We are looking for a Lead Researcher to join Frontline AIDS and our consortium partners in our efforts to research the effectiveness and acceptability of underused Hepatitis C prevention innovations with people who use drugs in community and prison harm reduction settings in three Lower Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

You are an experienced researcher with a clear focus on team objectives, as well as your own. You will promote good practice within your field of expertise and will challenge ways of working to ensure the highest quality and levels of efficiency.

Your actions will be aligned with the vision and mission of Frontline AIDS and you will inspire the same behaviour in your peers. You are comfortable working in a hybrid matrix management environment.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership on Research

  • Representing Frontline AIDS work and working in close collaboration with academic and grant implementors in country and internationally, to ensure a cohesive joint portfolio of work on Hepatitis C contributing to the evidence base required to achieve the WHO set target to reduce new hepatitis C infections among people who inject drugs by 75% by 2030.

  • Responsible for overseeing and developing research protocols and tools for data collection and analysis for operational research studies in partnership with communities of people who use drugs in Egypt, Nigeria and Kyrgyzstan and ensuring the soundness of the research.

  • To oversee and co-design processes of ethically and meaningfully engaging with people who use drugs in the implementation sites to ensure their involvement in research and piloting initiatives.

  • You will work to the highest standards of community involvement and take an appropriate risk-based approach to the involvement of these communities.

  • To lead on all aspects of quality assurance across all research outputs of the consortium including reviewing and signing off on protocols, methodologies, approvals and drafts.

  • Support and help advise partners on getting research protocols through relevant national ethical review boards.

  • To represent and communicate on behalf of Frontline AIDS and the consortia, the research programme to high level external stakeholders such as UNITAID, the Global Fund, UN bodies such as WHO, IAS and Academic bodies. This will include submitting and presenting abstracts in academic forums, conferences, national and international forums and speaking on high level panels externally.

  • Support partners to use the study findings in their networking and advocacy with national governments.

  • Working with the wider team to use the programme outputs and experience to position the Frontline AIDS partnership as a global leader in innovation in community led approaches
    to harm reduction. This will be in line with the partnership’s innovation road map and action 6 of its strategy, the Global Plan of Action.

  • To network and communicate the work with a global technical reference group of external expertise to ensure that the research produced is of practical use to the wider harm reduction community in understanding the efficacy of these underused approaches and advancing the scalability framework for the national grants.

    Team Specific

  • Responsible for leading and task managing a team of in country researchers and guiding them through the process of research implementation.

  • Representing the Frontline AIDS led Consortia on various global and regional technical working groups that form part of the project governance structure, including the global steering committee that includes UNITAID, and the global technical advisory panel.

  • Working closely with the Frontline AIDS Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team along with research partner Alliance for Public Health in Ukraine, to support the monitoring of the programme and data management.

  • Working closely with the Lead: Programmes to ensure high standards of project delivery across the consortia including high quality and sound research outputs.

  • Acting as deputy project manager from time to time to ensure timely and high-quality decision making and representation.

  • Work with partners to shape research work that can support the ethical testing, scaling and sustainability of successful underused harm reduction methods and defend the soundness of the research.

  • To provide leadership across the organisation and partnership on emerging areas of harm reduction research and where the partnership can add most value. This may include supporting the development of funding proposals or consortia.

    Operational Management

  • Oversee and task manage a complex, multi-country research portfolio including multiple partners, consultants and staff.

  • Working closely with the Lead: Programmes, Adviser: Programme Safeguarding and the External Technical Reference group to provide clear and practical guidance on how research processes will approach participant safeguarding in line with the organisational safeguarding framework to inform research design and risk management.
