Organisational BackgroundThe Uganda Association of Women Lawyers, FIDA (U) is a non-governmental
organization that promotes and defends human rights with an emphasis on women
and children as beneficiaries.
FIDA was formed in 1974 as the Uganda chapter of Federacio Internationales de Abogadas or the International Federation of Women Lawyers.
FIDA Uganda was formed as a membership association for female lawyers
with a primary objective of promoting the professional growth of its members and
helping women access their rights. The FIDA Uganda office is located on Plot 4,
Robert Mugabe Road, Mbuya, Kampala district.

Main purpose of the post:
The Senior Legal Officer is responsible for providing FIDA-Uganda’s clients with
legal advice and representation according to high standards of professionalism and
best practice and guiding and supervising the Legal Officers; aiming to empower
vulnerable women and children to enjoy their rights as equals.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Take on personal client work load as appropriate
Support and supervise Legal Officers; giving them the necessary guidance and
coaching to ensure that our clients receive the best services as per the FIDA
Uganda policy and best practice standards
Act as a point of referral for the Legal Officers on challenging cases and issues.

Support in the development of project implementation detailed plans; including
participating in stakeholder analysis and research
Support in engaging with the media, influencing and enabling them to promote
the changes in attitudes and behaviours identified as goals in the project plan
Coordinate planning, setting targets and implementing the different activities
Building relationships with key stakeholders in the
community; ensuring that the duty bearers are legally empowered to protect rights of community members
Ensuring that community members are continuously sensitised on the basics of
the law and given effective legal counselling on any legal matters that may arise
As directed by FIDA Uganda’s Influencing, Advocacy and Strategic Litigation
Plan; circulating publicity and IEC campaign material
Person Specifications
Bachelor of Laws. Possession of a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is a
must.
Must be computer literate.
Possession of a Practicing Certificate will be of added advantage
A Masters in Law will be an added advantage
At least 5 years’ experience in the related field with at least 2 of them in a
senior role.

Ability to uphold secrecy of correspondence
