Job Overview

This position will be part of the Global Talent team that is based in Kampala, Uganda. This role will report to the Global Talent Manager.

In this role, key responsibilities will include managing a portfolio of mid level to senior level global team members based in Kampala to support them and curate their employee experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employee Relations: Provide an excellent internal customer experience by creating clear channels for employees within your oversight group to raise questions or concerns, an empathetic approach to addressing these, with a quick turnaround time to resolution.
  • Disciplinary and HR Issues: Lead the response to any HR issues, either disciplinary or emergency-related for employees in your oversight group.
  • On-boarding: Create strong on-boarding tools to ensure new Fenix team members have the information, tools and relationships they need to succeed at Fenix.
  • Growth: Support the team through facilitation, tools development, coaching, and escalation where needed to ensure they receive regular performance reviews, have a positive working relationship with their manager, know how to navigate and envision their career path at Fenix, and troubleshooting challenges that they are facing.
    Compensation and Benefits.

    Job Grading:
  • Work with the Global Talent Manager to apply our banding framework to new roles as well as internal promotions and career growth discussions for employees within your portfolio.
  • Payroll Operations: Prepare payroll for the team within your portfolio on a monthly basis, ensuring smooth and accurate operations.
  • Compliance, Policy, Legal.
  • Work closely with the global Legal & Ethics team and, where relevant, local counsel to manage the following functions.
  • Contracts and legal documentation: Ensure that the employees under your oversight have contracts in place that meet relevant employment law requirements.
  • This will include the administration of NDAs and CIIAAs.
  • HR Guidelines & Processes: Work with the Global Talent Manager to implement all HR policies, processes, best practices and guidelines, ensuring that they balance the needs of the team with the business.
  • HR Law & Tax Compliance: Ensure all employees within your oversight group are compliant with local HR/employment laws and pay necessary PAYE, NSSF and other relevant
    taxes and fees.
  • HRIS Management: Ensure that our HRIS system is fully updated for the employees under your oversight.
  • Employee Data and Reporting: Support decision making and Fenix’s strategy by providing workforce trends and analysis
  • System Improvements: Support in continual review of our way of doing things, HR processes and workflows to ensure, we retain great employee experience and business efficiency.

    Required Skills & Experience
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree (Masters Degree preferred)
  • At least 5 years experience in an HR role (preferably in Uganda and/or East Africa)
  • High level of maturity, integrity, and discretion
  • Proven track record executing in a fast moving, detail oriented environment with a commitment to effective communication and customer service
  • Derives a high level of satisfaction from being highly responsive and timely in dealing with individual issues - we want our internal customers (our team) to be taken care of just like we take care of our external customers
  • Strategic thinking, problem solving, and process improvement abilities
  • High Emotional Intelligence and ability to coach employees and managers to develop solutions that they can own and that work for them.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills (English)
  • Excitement about Fenix’s mission and a deep desire to make an impact on off-grid and financially underserved customers in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Ability and drive to work independently
