The project intervention will enable forest communities to better participate in the forest coffee value chain. This will be achieved by
Building the capacities of farmers, their cooperatives and key stakeholders involved in the value chain
Supporting farmers in improving quality, productivity and branding and certification of their natural forest coffee produce
Linking forest coffee producers to export markets and facilitating access to micro credit, and
Using lessons from catalysing the forest coffee value chain to support policy development.
Contribute to the sustenance of the natural resources in the area through strengthening of the participatory forest managing cooperatives (PFMCs) and undertaking enrichment planting
By providing a sustainable and valuable livelihood option for forest communities, cultivation of the coffee value chain will also contribute to reduced environmental degradation.
Deforestation will be reduced within the biodiversity rich Afromontane rainforest with an associated decrease in emissions of greenhouse gases.
The project will work alongside government and private sector actors supporting coffee production/handling practices and involve the building of relationships with contractors/buyers.
Purpose of the Role
The Project Coordinator (PC) will be responsible for leading the overall implementation of the project.
The PC will be undertaking project management, planning, implementation; playing leading role in internal and external project reporting, financial management, partners’ engagement, monitoring and evaluation of the project activities, outputs and impacts.
Responsibilities involve ensuring that the project activities are integrated effectively, and that all project relevant stakeholders at all levels are fully engaged.
The PC will
Lead work in areas of assessing markets, developing market linkage, supporting farmers to profitably meet market requirements by addressing issues such as production, productivity and coffee quality.
This will be done within a framework of biodiversity conservation,
Be the overall supervisor of the project, responsible for contract compliance, staff management, monitoring and evaluation, financial management at project level, and reporting,
Work closely with the Farm Africa Head of Programmes to ensure proper running of the project,
Train professionals, technicians and producers to implement sustainable production practices to facilitate the process of certification for coffee, and
Ensure constant liaison with local partners, forest stakeholders and government partners.
Be a focal
person for any forest coffee related matters including scaling up of projects of similar nature in and outside of the region
Job Requirements
Person Specification
Education, qualifications & other knowledge
Essential
Master’s degree in Economics, Business Administration and / or Marketing related to Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Agriculture or a related field; Advanced degree a plus;
Understanding and experience of participatory approaches and sustainable development
Good understanding and firm belief in gender equality
Desirable
Knowledge of forestry and conservation issues (i.e. REDD+), Community-based Forest
Management, Forest Certification, forestry policies and institutions
Experience
Essential
Minimum 6 years or above relevant experience in economic development related to forestry or natural resources management and policy;
Proven experience working in value chains to efficiently increase trade and incomes
Experience in capacity building related to market engagement and/or private sector development preferably with a range of Government, Non-Government and Private Sector actors;
At least four years supervisory experience managing and supervising field staff (i.e. project management, planning and monitoring) preferably with an International NGO
Desirable
Field experience in coffee production and the coffee value chain
Knowledge and experience in the process and benefits of Certification and its implications for farmers
Knowledge and experience working in micro credit.

Ability and willingness to travel and reside in rural areas.
