Farm Africa Kenya received funding from the DFID Aid Match funding scheme to implement the Growing Futures project.



Growing Futures aims to develop a model to expand agricultural entrepreneurial skills to improve livelihood opportunities for young people engaging in profitable and viable agri-enterprises beyond the traditional maize production.


The post holder will lead in the development of commercial opportunities for farmers in the
French Beans, Peas, and Cabbages among other selected value chains and train farmer in
technical/agronomy skills, agribusiness development and marketing.


The post requires an individual with solid technical expertise and experience in planning, growing and marketing Horticultural value chains in commercial out-grower scheme setting


Responsibilities


  • Establish the needs of youths in horticulture in the county and work with key market players to enhance linkages to the project
  • Work closely with the project coordinator to identify key business targets, develop and
    deliver a plan to create opportunities and to achieve those targets including increase in
    production to meet market demand and incomes for the youths
  • Provide capacity development training and support to the project in Trans Nzoia
  • County to effectively mobilise and deliver agri-business development services to
    beneficiaries (social mobilising, identification of interest youth groups, business planning, and strengthening market linkages).
  • Coordinate relevant stakeholders and service providers to deliver trainings to project beneficiaries such as financial literacy trainings, agri-business loans, inputs etc
  • Review existing information in the projects and provide training on identified markets
    and viable opportunities in the Horticultural export value chains
  • Ensure there is up to date information about markets in the Horticultural value chains
    and conduct analysis of trends in these value chains: identify, critical constraints and
    promising opportunities in order to improve the functioning of the value chains, thereby
    improving access to markets
  • Participate in developing business plans and training programme, and conduct training
    to the youth groups and individual farmer on-farm support
  • Conduct market studies and advise on best implementation strategies that would
    ensure that targeted farmer groups have profitable agribusiness ventures
  • Work with the Agribusiness project officer and project coordinator to train the groups
    on business planning and develop bankable business plans for all farmer groups and
    individual replicators
  • Conduct monthly periodic reviews to ensure that all business plans are adhered to and
    the entrepreneurial capacity of the beneficiaries is enhanced
  • Develop a sustainable marketing structure, including an umbrella County commodity
    marketing association to enhance market access
  • Compile monthly and quarterly reports (with illustrations such as graphs) to indicate the
    progress of the farmers in pursuing their respective value chains
  • Develop strategic linkages with other value chain actors with a view of creating
    synergistic partnerships/collaborations that would be beneficial to the farmers’ agribusiness enterprises
  • Recommend relevant improvements in the agri-business enterprises that would enable
    the groups realize better returns on their investments
  • Any other duties as may be directed by the line manager, PM or CD


    Qualifications

  • A degree in Horticulture/Agribusiness
    Management/ Agricultural
    Economics/Agriculture or any other relevant
    qualification from a recognised university
  • Knowledge and practical experience in
    value chain development
  • Demonstrated track record of business
    development success with smallholder
    farmers in Horticultural value chains
  • Experience in public private partnerships
  • Previous work experience with farmer
    organisations
  • Experience5+ years work experience in promoting production of horticultural value chains Commercial production of horticultural
    crops with small holder farmers
  • 5+Experience in smallholder farmer
    agribusiness capacity development
  • Capacity building of organisations and
    individuals
  • Knowledge of the horticulture export sector
    in Kenya Participatory training methodologies
  • Strong background in agronomic
    management of horticultural crops from the
    private sector
  • Network of private sector contacts
  • Skills & abilities Possess skills in community mobilisation
  • A go-getter and able to develop new
    business partnerships and ingenious but
    practical business ideas
  • Networking skills
