Background

  • Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences.

  • WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives.

  • In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.

    Main purpose of the job:

  • To lead the development and execution of a communications strategy to support RHAP’s food policy advocacy campaigns under the Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA) brand.

  • To implement and monitor an organisation-wide communications strategy and support colleagues across four programme areas (Health policy, Finance, HRH and Community engagement).

  • To ensure that effective communication strategies and tactics are built into and aligned across all programme and advocacy initiatives

    Key performance areas

  • Develop, implement and monitor a food policy communications strategy to advance the food policy advocacy goals of RHAPs HEALA project.

  • Serve as the communications lead for the HEALA project and coordinate with and support food policy partner communication activities to ensure strategy and messaging alignment.

  • Coordinate and develop, including writing copy and leading the design of materials, and distribute and maintain all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, op ed’s, press releases, fact sheets, social media and website.

  • Develop social media strategy & oversee its implementation across key digital platforms (twitter, facebook, instagram, youtube).

  • Oversee the monitoring of print and digital media coverage by setting up systems to track coverage.

  • Draft media statements and lead on media relations, including press conferences, media briefings, forums and reactive rapid response activities when necessary.

  • Build a comprehensive network of journalists in grassroots and
    national media.

  • Oversee the development of media reports for RHAP and the donor.

  • Provide training and support to community-based partners on communication strategies and tactics.

  • Help organise and facilitate media training workshops to help build community-based partners and spokespeople communications capacity.

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of RHAP’s work and highlight opportunities to elevate the organisation and its position with stakeholders.

  • Develop and implement HEALA branding guidelines to ensure consistent application across all communication mediums such as templates, forms, signage and stationery.

  • Provide direction and support to the redesign of RHAP’s website.

  • Obtain input from internal stakeholders to ensure information is relevant, accurate and up to date.

    Required minimum education and training

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in communications, journalism or health related field.

    Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Professional proficiency in English and 1 additional South African language.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, good verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

  • Skilled at social media content creation, platforms and Wordpress.

  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies, with an ability to operate at a strategic and tactical level.

  • Extremely organized and well managed, self-starter, able to work independently; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.

  • Commitment to meeting deadlines and delivering on tasks. Able to work effectively under tight deadlines.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work/connect with diverse culture/contexts.

  • Creative and resourceful in solving problems; able to exercise discretion and independent decisionmaking.

  • Experience translating academic/scientific research into communications pieces is an advantage

  • Sincere commitment to social justice and health equity

    Required minimum work experience

  • Three years of communications, journalism or public relations or related experience, specifically with small organisations and justice organisations
