Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in economics, international development or related field

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience engaging governments in Africa and development partners of Africa
  • Demonstrated success engaging bilateral and multilateral institutions working in Africa leading to financing of development priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking
  • Education and demonstrated knowledge of the emerging business environment in Africa and related impacts on natural resources
  • Computer literacy to use all MS Office packages
  • Ability to work in English and French is highly preferred
  • Existing relationships with African government and business leaders
  • Advance study of and experience working on development issues in multiple African regions
  • Extensive experience living and working in Africa and an ability to work in a cross cultural environment

    Key Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Advance the organization’s priorities with government in the priority countries and with bilateral and multilateral institutions influencing land use in Africa

  • Working closely with country directors and technical staff, define strategies to support African governments in achieving development targets while maintaining and building on wildlife and wildlands.
  • Engage leaders in government and foreign missions on the continent to garner support for wildlife friendly development agendas
  • Advise governments on policy and financing strategies that will leverage wildlife and wildlands to achieve national aspirations
  • Support African negotiators and their multilateral partners to develop and advocate for African positions in international negotiation
  • Support pan African approaches through the AU and regional economic blocks
  • Help communicate African positions on wildlife issues to development partners of African nations and advise on investment strategies that will support those aspirations
  • Serve as team lead on certain cross functional projects aimed at impact and financing through policy
  • Represent the organization in public and at conferences and meetings that are priority government engagement events

    2. Lead the organization’s efforts to raise public funding for wildlife and wild lands in priority landscapes across Africa

  • Actively cultivate high level contacts in government
    and public donor agencies across Africa to develop and finance strategies that protect wildlife and wild lands.
  • Provide technical input into public financing programs to support positive outcomes for wildlife.
  • Work with the organization’s proposal writing teams to ensure that proposals respond to national priorities of the countries where the organization works.
  • Engage government to gain support for the organization’s policy agendas and public funding proposals.
  • Provide technical input into public funding proposals of the organization and partners as necessary.
  • Support country directors to have the most up to date and strategic insights from the organization’s work globally in their engagements with government and public donors

    3. Supervise the organization’s headquarters based government engagement team

  • In close consultation with the organization’s globally dispersed government engagement team and country directors, guide priorities of the HQ based government engagement team.
  • Provide direct supervision of the Senior Manager of the government engagement team to assist him in supervision and management of the program design focused team.
  • Work together with the government engagement leadership team to define global priorities and outcomes and rally the support of the HQ based team to achieve those priorities.
  • Oversee the budget of the HQ based team, including achieving revenue targets and delivering within budget.
  • Serve as first point of contact for other HQ based teams for government engagement and program design related inquiries.
