Job Summary

  • The post-holder will be based in Addis Ababa, and will work on the evaluation of the quality of care network in the country, aiming to promote Maternal, Newborn and Child Health.

  • The position holder will work collaboratively with EPHI and LSHTM team based in country and aboard.

    Project Information

  • Ethiopian public health institute in collaboration with London School of Hygiene & Tropical medicine is working on different research projects funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

  • The Informed Decisions for Actions in Maternal and Newborn Health project (IDEAS) is one of these projects and its aim is to improve the health and survival of mothers and babies through generating evidence to inform policy and practice in Ethiopia.

  • One of the IDEAS project themes is collaborating with a multi-country research project titled: “How does a multi-country, multilateral network focused on specific health care improvements evolve and what shapes its ability to achieve its goals?” (Short title: ‘QCN project’).

  • This country-based case-study approach is conducted in Malawi, Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Uganda.

  • This research seeks to inform planning and delivery of future multi-country implementation-focused networks, and understand how this could be improved so as to better achieve set goals.

  • The overall aim of this three-year research program in Ethiopia is to examine how the QCN (established in 2017) is constructed, how it operates and assess its effects.

    Main activities and responsibilities

    Qualitative work

  • coordinate qualitative research according to plans

  • contribute to qualitative sampling framework development

  • contribute to developing and translating discussion topic guides

  • conduct interviews

  • transcribe/ translate qualitative data

  • analyze qualitative data in a team

    Quantitative work

  • coordinate quantitative research according
    to plans

  • contribute to developing and translating survey tools

  • manage the electronic distribution of survey tools on QCN network's

  • analyze quantitative data with team

  • visit the QCN participating health system offices, hospitals and other health delivery sites to attend Quality Network meetings and events, and observe implementation of new procedures

    Crosscutting

  • review published and unpublished documents

  • analyze policy process

  • write descriptive and analytic reports of findings in English

  • maintain regular correspondence with cross site co-coordinator, and other members of the research and project team

    Job Requirements

  • Senior Researcher with PhD in Epidemiology/Sociology/Anthropology or MSc in Epidemiology/Sociology/ Anthropology with demonstrated research experience

  • Minimum of 7 years for PhD and 8 years for Msc /MA years of proven work experience in progressive senior-level research, program, project management

    Additional Job Requirements

  • Extensive experience in qualitative data collection and analysis

  • Experience in quantitative data collection and analysis

  • A record of peer-reviewed publications in line with respective areas of discipline

  • Strong leadership and excellent interpersonal communication skills, energetic, passionate, patient, proactive and self-motivated

  • Good written and spoken English

  • Ability to build rapport and feel comfortable working in a team

  • Ability to read text, absorb and pick out the interesting, important and relevant parts

  • Willing to travel outside Addis Ababa

  • Willingness to learn and develop skills
