Job Description

  • Ethiopia is showing significant reduction of under nutrition over the past 15 years.

  • According to the 2016 DHS report, the prevalence of stunting is reduced from 57% in 2000 to 38% in 2016.

  • However, several recent health and nutrition surveys indicated that the under nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity (in urban population) and diet-related diseases (diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer) with increasing trend over the years have now become are significant public health problems in the country.

  • Diet is one of the single most important contributors to health. Globalization, economic growth, population growth, urbanization, and climate change are some of the key contributors to dietary changes and loss of traditional food culture that can lead to diet-related diseases and malnutrition.

  • These changes highlight the need for consistent, simple and practical dietary guidelines to enable the population to make informed choices of healthy diet, prevent diet-related diseases, and policy recommendations on healthy food availability, accessibility, and affordability in the country.

  • Food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) are intended to establish a basis for public food and nutrition, health and agricultural policies and nutrition education programmes to foster healthy eating habits and lifestyles.

  • They provide advice to the general public on foods, food groups and dietary patterns and behaviours to improve nutrition, promote overall health and prevent chronic diseases.

  • Lately, some countries have been expanding the role of FBDGs by including sustainability in their dietary patterns.

  • Currently in Ethiopia, a national Food-based dietary guideline development process has reached at its final step where compilation needs to be done based on generated evidence and consultation with different stakeholders.

  • In the first phase, the FBDGs technical working group members representing different organizations and works closely with the national nutrition technical committee and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and Operational Researches (OR) sub-committee, under the overall coordination of Ethiopian Public Health Institute.

  • The Ministry in general and our directorate specifically take it as a flagship since it is a technical policy tool in bringing up major health and nutrition improvements. So, we are working on compiling the national guideline and by far need to hire an experienced qualified expert to do this job as deliverables detailed here under.

    Purpose

  • To compile the final Ethiopian Food-Based Dietary Guidelines and support
    organize consultations with different stakeholder

    The consultant will report to the Food and Nutrition Research Directorate (EPHI) and the FBGD project coordinators at EPHI

  • Participate and facilitate the regular FBDGs working group meetings

  • Support the finalization and development of manuscript developed under the phase 1 FBDGs development process

  • Develop FBDG template, plan the compilation and additional evidence needed and agree with the working group

  • Final draft FBDGs and incorporate feedback from the FBDG working groups

  • Plan and manage the final FBDGs launching events to get endorsement and approval of the Ethiopian FBDGs

  • Advice and design the implementation, promotion and dissemination of the FBDGs in the specific target area/population in Ethiopia

  • These duties will be carried out with the facilitation of the external senior nutrition consultant, FBDGs technical working group, experts from EPHI, FAO and WUR and other stakeholders at national and regional level

    Job Requirements

  • The consultant should be a recognized expert in nutrition, epidemiology, agriculture, food security, health, dietetics, education, food science, food policy, and/or communication in Ethiopia.

  • Good experience in working on SBCC materials preparation compilation and documentation.

  • Experience on strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Team players and innovative.

    Desirable qualifications and experience

  • PhD with 15 years and above on experience in nutrition SBCC material message development and compiling nutrition related strategic documents, higher education, research, policy-advocacy and grass root level nutrition services.

  • The technical working group members commit to serve for the duration until the development of FBDGs are finalized, disseminated and implementation has begun

    Deliverables

  • Develop outline for the Ethiopian FBDG based on review and drafted document (key messages, food graphics, and key behavioural communication principles relevant to the guideline development).

  • Schedule and support respective sections of the guide based on agreed timeline with the working group

  • Finalize reviewed document and prepare manuscripts

  • Organize, finalize and compile the guideline

  • Reviewed booklets, leaflets and other related materials in place

  • Participate in regular TWG meetings and to review the work on FBDGs and other related materials.

  • Submit progress report monthly and ready the guideline in time.

  • Plan and manage the launching workshop with the technical committee and project coordinators
