Job Description

Background

Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is an exciting and dynamic autonomous federal government institute having its own legal personality as the main government body in charge of three main tasks as expressed in the regulation number 301/2013.

The institute is mandated to conduct researches and technology transfer in public health issue; provide referral service for diagnostic and analytical tests; support the capacity building of health and food science laboratories at the national level for quality laboratory services; leads the public health emergency management of the country; and conduct researches in traditional medicine.

The Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) division focuses on disease outbreaks, nutritional emergencies, and health consequences of natural and manmade disasters.

PHEM mainly emphasizes on early and timely detection, risk communication and control of epidemics and other public health threats, reduction in morbidity, mortality as well as case fatality rate of epidemic diseases to cope with existing, emerging and re-emerging epidemics, natural disasters of national and international concerns.

Roles and Responsibility:

  • Support and coordinate communication between public health and animal health sector and partners to ensure zoonotic disease surveillance, response and other related activities
  • Facilitate the development and maintenance of surveillance system for zoonotic diseases (especially on epidemic prone zoonotic diseases)
  • Conducts and coordinates active, epidemiologic surveillance for human cases of zoonotic disease in Ethiopia in collaboration other sectors and other partners
  • Strategize and develop effective methods regarding surveillance, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of zoonotic disease of public health importance
  • Provide technical assistance in epidemiological investigation to identify zoonotic infectious agents or route of transmission from animal to human or vice-versa, in implementing biosecurity or bio-containment measures when appropriate, and implementing control measures
  • Identify areas and practices within the country where there is
    a high risk of disease transmission at the animal-human interface and measures to reduce the risk
  • Establish, encourage and maintain communications and information exchange with other institutions, agencies and partners with public health roles and combine data from collaborating institutions
  • Identify the existing activities, resources and responsibilities relating to zoonoses in each sector and identify areas in which sensitivity may arise when developing collaborations
  • Provide technical assistance in prevention and control of epidemic prone zoonotic diseases (Avian influenza, Pandemic Influenza, Anthrax, Rift valley fever, Rabies etc) and zoonotic diseases of public health importance
  • Develop technical documents, long term and short term plans in addressing zoonotic diseases and associated public health impacts
  • Communicate findings of zoonotic disease investigation and response activities performed jointly by Ministry of Health and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock
  • Provide technical assistance in document development, provision of trainings to human health, Veterinary staffs and community level facilities to increase zoonotic disease awareness
  • Attend in international and national meetings, workshops, scientific panels addressing zoonotic diseases
  • Actively engage in providing technical supports, educational outreaches specific to zoonotic diseases

    Job Requirements

  • Qualification: First degree in veterinary medicine(DVM) with MPH, Infectious Diseases or MSc in related fields

  • Minimum Experience: Four (4) years

  • Required number: Two (2)

    Desirable Qualities, Skills and Competences:

  • Proven knowledge in emerging and zoonotic infectious diseases
  • Effective in communication, multi-tasking, organizational, and prioritization
  • Ability to meet deadlines; work independently and cooperatively with team members
  • Excellent communication skills, preferably with some experience in developing proposals, scientific reports/papers
  • Ability and willingness to travel to rural locations
  • Experience in statistical tools like SPSS, EPI info literate, and good analytical and communication skill
