Job Description

Background

Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is an exciting and dynamic autonomous federal government institute having its own legal personality as the main government body in charge of three main tasks as expressed in the regulation number 301/2013.

The institute is mandated to conduct researches and technology transfer in public health issue; provide referral service for diagnostic and analytical tests; support the capacity building of health and food science laboratories at the national level for quality laboratory services; leads the public health emergency management of the country; and conduct researches in traditional medicine.

The Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) division focuses on disease outbreaks, nutritional emergencies, and health consequences of natural and manmade disasters.

PHEM mainly emphasizes on early and timely detection, risk communication and control of epidemics and other public health threats, reduction in morbidity, mortality as well as case fatality rate of epidemic diseases to cope with existing, emerging and re-emerging epidemics, natural disasters of national and international concerns.

Roles and Responsibility:

  • Develop and support operational research projects, short term and long term strategic research plans
  • Consult on strategic approaches in eradication, elimination, or prevention and control of viral diseases
  • Provide technical consultation and support to virology laboratories
  • Provide technical expertise in investigation, detection and response
    for viral epidemic disease conditions
  • Provide technical assistance in epidemiological investigation and response of public health Emergencies
  • Conduct researches, prepare scientific paper development and educational materials
  • Participation and provision of technical expertise in scientific conferences at national and international level
  • Analysis and interpretation surveillance data and provide annual progress report, scientific papers, regular weekly feedbacks
  • Conduct surveillance activities, case investigation, outbreak response activities
  • Follow and monitor the trends of diseases/conditions under public health surveillance
  • Prepare and review weekly epidemiological bulletin
  • Identify, assess and monitor existing or potential threats related to the public health

    Job Requirements

  • Qualification: MSc in Virology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Molecular Biology or Immunology

  • Minimum Experience: Four (4) years

  • Required number: Three (3)

    Desirable Qualities, Skills and Competences:

  • Efficient in virological/microbilogical/parasitological/molecular/immunologicaldata analysis and interpretation
  • Proficient in virological/microbilogical/parasitological/molecular/immunological laboratory diagnostic methods and practices
  • Proven knowledge in the epidemiology of pathogens having epidemic potentials
  • Effective in case investigation, coordination of response activities
  • Effective in communication, multi-tasking, organizational, and prioritization
  • Ability to meet deadlines; work independently and cooperatively with team members
  • Excellent communication skills, preferably with good experience in developing proposals and winning grants
  • Ability and willingness to travel to rural locations
  • Advanced experience in statistical tools
