Job Description

Background

Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is an exciting and dynamic autonomous federal government institute having its own legal personality as the main government body in charge of three main tasks as expressed in the regulation number 301/2013.

The institute is mandated to conduct researches and technology transfer in public health issue; provide referral service for diagnostic and analytical tests; support the capacity building of health and food science laboratories at the national level for quality laboratory services; leads the public health emergency management of the country; and conduct researches in traditional medicine.

The Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) division focuses on disease outbreaks, nutritional emergencies, and health consequences of natural and manmade disasters.

PHEM mainly emphasizes on early and timely detection, risk communication and control of epidemics and other public health threats, reduction in morbidity, mortality as well as case fatality rate of epidemic diseases to cope with existing, emerging and re-emerging epidemics, natural disasters of national and international concerns.

Roles and Responsibility:

  • Analysis and interpretation surveillance data and provide annual progress report, scientific papers, regular weekly feedbacks
  • Conduct surveillance activities, case investigation, outbreak response activities
  • Follow and monitor the trends of diseases/conditions under public health surveillance
  • Prepare weekly epidemiological bulletin
  • Identify, assess and monitor existing or potential threats related to the public health
  • Ensure the achievements of surveillance indicators as per the specific program
  • Track and monitor public health events
  • Conduct surveillance
    system evaluation
  • Ensure timely provision of laboratory results related to feedback to health care providers through regional health bureaus
  • Conduct post outbreak assessment and document lesson learnt
  • Prepare training material, guidelines, protocols and manuals for public health priority diseases and conditions
  • Organize and give short term trainings to regions and other health workers
  • Mobilize and secure resources required for the trainings, emergency response, supervisions, etc
  • Conduct rapid assessment and provide support during and after outbreaks/public health emergencies
  • Working under stress condition with additional extra time when required
  • Prepare technical field report to the team leader and directorate after each field work
  • Willing to be on call for emergency duty at the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and at any place

    Job Requirements

  • Qualification: MSc in Field Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases, and other related fields

  • Minimum Experience: Two (2) years

  • Required number: Seventeen (17)

    Desirable Qualities, Skills and Competences:

  • Proficient in collection, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological data
  • Effective in case investigation, coordination of response activities
  • Effective in communication, multi-tasking, organizational, and prioritization
  • Ability to meet deadlines; work independently and cooperatively with team members
  • Excellent communication skills, preferably with some experience or exposure to developing and writing proposals
  • Ability and willingness to travel to rural locations
  • Experience in statistical tools like SPSS and EPI info literate and good analytical and communication skill
