Job Description

Background

Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is an exciting and dynamic autonomous federal government institute having its own legal personality as the main government body in charge of three main tasks as expressed in the regulation number 301/2013.

The institute is mandated to conduct researches and technology transfer in public health issue; provide referral service for diagnostic and analytical tests; support the capacity building of health and food science laboratories at the national level for quality laboratory services; leads the public health emergency management of the country; and conduct researches in traditional medicine.

The Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) division focuses on disease outbreaks, nutritional emergencies, and health consequences of natural and manmade disasters.

PHEM mainly emphasizes on early and timely detection, risk communication and control of epidemics and other public health threats, reduction in morbidity, mortality as well as case fatality rate of epidemic diseases to cope with existing, emerging and re-emerging epidemics, natural disasters of national and international concerns.

Roles and Responsibility:

  • Support on designing national and region specific disaster risk management strategy
  • Support the development and updating of disaster risk profiles at federal and Woreda (district) level
  • Support sensitization campaigns to deal with natural disaster (risks) at Woreda and community level
  • Advice on drought management approaches and best strategies to enhance resilience
  • Facilitate community based disaster
    risk management training and liaise with DRM experts for developing training materials on various natural and manmade disasters;
  • Provide technical advice for improvement of existing early warning systems and coordination between development partners in resource utilization and prioritization;
  • Support and assist in disaster risk management assessments of Woredas through participatory approaches together with technical experts.
  • Provide technical support to early warning team and partner staff on hazard based disaster risk mitigation measures
  • Improve regional early warning system through effective communication mechanisms, strengthen community level systems in the area of impending natural disasters and disease outbreak warnings through mass media

    Job Requirements

  • Qualification: MSc in Disaster Risk Management

  • Minimum Experience: Four (4) years

  • Required number: Two (2)

    Desirable Qualities, Skills and Competences:

  • Experience with disaster risk reduction approaches, participatory and willingness to work in the field for long periods;
  • Capable of strategic, creative, and innovative thinking
  • A successful track record in coordinating /managing local level community development works
  • Demonstrated experience in capacity building at various levels
  • Excellent communication skills, preferably with some experience or exposure to developing and writing proposals
  • Ability and willingness to travel to rural locations
  • Experience in statistical tools like SPSS and EPI info literate and good analytical and communication skill
