Job Overview

  • The Research Officer will be responsible for supporting the overall research strategy by making sure that research areas are more relevant to the local community’s health problems; will plan and prepare research proposals on priority areas of study; agree on project requirements and objectives; participate in various types of global and national (Ethiopian) evidence and experiences generating in implementing PHC; search for and retrieve information from paper-based sources, the internet and online databases; write questionnaires; conduct interviews in field study; analyze data and manage various research projects.

  • The Research Officer will support technical experts within the Program and provide support across programs.

  • This position will liaise with global, regional and local officials, implementing partners and IIfPHC-E project staff. This position will report to the Senior Research Advisor.

    Key Responsibilities but not limited to

    Technical Support

  • Undertake research initiatives of the Institute’s as well as the Ministry of Health, regional bureaus and district authorities to provide the evidence required for the formulation and implementation of PHC programs

  • Support the preparation of case study about Ethiopia’s PHC system

  • Conduct PHC research using a variety of methods: qualitative, quantitative and mixed research methods

  • Engage in various systematic reviews, meta-analysis on PHC at global and national levels

  • Supervise, tutor and act as a mentor to junior/external researchers

  • Support research fellows working for the Institute;

  • Ensure procedures and protocols are followed in research work

  • Coordinate and supervise small research award grants of the Institute

  • Support the Institute’s capacity building training and advocacy work

  • Prepare proposals, internal and external reports, policy briefs and other documents

  • Prepare manuscripts and publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals

  • Support the development of policy briefs

  • Write speeches, digest, articles, reports, etc.

  • Organize international/national conferences; make conference presentations

    Liaison and program contact

    ● Identify strategic partners for research in primary health care nationally and globally

    ● Liaise with external researchers, academics
    and local authorities

    ● Assist in capacity building, training programs of the Institute so that the relevant research proposals are ahead of time and ready for the respective trainees and instructors

    ● Engage in monitoring and evaluation of programs and projects

    ● Involve in research complimentary and optional assessment which include program management and robust and publishing on journals

    Policy development

    ● Contribute to the development of PHC policy briefs

    ● Contribute to national and global policy analysis and research on primary health care, including maternal and child health, reproductive health, child health etc and Universal Health Coverage.

    ● Keep up-to-date with research/policy developments; evaluate policy implementation and make recommendations

    Publication and dissemination

    ● Ensure sharing of state of the art evidence of health interventions and best practices

    ● Ensure the documentation and dissemination of lessons learned from PHC programs

    Resource Mobilization

    ●Identify potential research grant opportunities

    ●Support the development of research proposals and protocols

    Job Requirements

  • MPH/MSc/MA in health or related field with a minimum of 7 years’ experience on related assignments. For Bachelor’s Degree, a minimum of 10 years’ experience

  • A minimum of 4 years relevant professional work experience for PhD

  • A minimum of 2 publications in reputable journals as principal investigator in the area of health

  • Proven ability to conduct research, proposal development, research methods, conducting research, data entry, data analysis with different software, write up and presentation skills.

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English -additional language is a plus

    ●Excellent program/project management, coordination and administrative skills

    ● Familiarity with online data collection platforms such as ODK, kobo

    ● Proficient in Microsoft Office, SPSS, EPinfo, etc

    ● Carry out any other duties according to skills and experiences as required.

    ● A strong interest and commitment to health systems, primary health care, health financing and Universal Health Coverage
