Position Summary and purpose

  • The laboratory technologist performs a variety of laboratory procedures including culture reading and identification and drug susceptibility testing in the TB reference laboratory using the available standard operating procedures.

  • The focus for the laboratory technologist is to ensure that accurate, reliable and timely testing is available to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of TB or MDR-TB patients in compliance and harmony with the quality management system.

    Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned laboratory testing following available standard operating procedures culture reading, identification, phenotypic and genotypic drug susceptibility testing and other TB laboratory tests.

  • Follow standard operating procedures when operating available instruments or equipment

  • Maintain an adequate supply of all reagents and consumables at each workstation.

  • Perform and document all routine and periodic preventative maintenance for all equipment

  • Perform instrumentation troubleshooting to correct problems; refer unsolved problems to section supervisor.

  • Perform, evaluate, and document quality control data and assure that patient results are not reported after quality control failure

  • Documents quality occurrences in compliance with the quality plan of the individual sections

  • Assist in preparing, reviewing or revising job-related documents

  • Maintaining patient request forms and other records in an orderly manner

  • Advise quality officer on significant quality control/quality assurance issues

  • Analyze technical problems pertaining to specimen adequacy, laboratory data, and
    instrumentation; determine cause and rectifies problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures

  • Confirm abnormal results and result discrepancies and initiate follow-up to resolve discrepancies

  • Complete all test worksheets on the assigned workstation

  • Document test results on the laboratory register and report forms

  • Report critical results or unusual results to the section supervisor in accordance with established policy.

  • Participate in in-service education programs.

  • Participate in the preparation for all inspections by accrediting agencies.

  • Process specimens for referral testing following established procedures

  • In consultation with the section supervisor, respond to customer inquiries about laboratory results.

  • Generate data and provide day-to-day documentation.

  • Prepares stains, reagents, media and solutions necessary for the performance of all laboratory tests

  • Assist in orientation and onsite training of new laboratory staffs

  • Processing proficiency panels in a timely manner

  • Attend staff meetings at the National TB Reference Laboratory

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by section supervisor, safety officer, quality officer or TB case team leader

    Job Requirements

  • Degree in medical laboratory technology/science

  • Zero year experience,

  • Graduated after 2010 Ethiopian calendar

  • Good personal communication

  • Strong oral and written skills in English and Amharic
