Job Summary

  • The fellowship assistant will work closely with the Health System and Reproductive Health Research Directorate to manage the day-to-day operations of the HaSET Maternal and Child Health Research Fellowship, including human resources, training, teaching curriculum development and implementation, and field logistics.

  • HaSET Maternal and Child Health Research Fellowship program envisions fostering a culture of research implementation.

  • The fellowship aims to build a network of skilled Ethiopian maternal and child health researchers who are able to contribute to the translation of scientific evidence to policy.

  • It will be implemented as a joint collaboration between the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College.

    The objectives of the MNCH research fellowship program are:

  • Provide early career professionals with the opportunity to pursue research in priority MNCH topics

  • Generate high quality evidence with the potential to influence decision making at a national level and subnational level

  • Inform national policy and program implementation guidelines with research products and deliverables created through the fellowship program

  • Encourage further and future collaboration between all participating HaSET institutions (Ethiopian Public Health Institute, Harvard SPH, and St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College) and other potential partners

  • To help coordinate the MNCH research fellowship program and assist with running the day to day activities,

  • The Ethiopian Public Health Research institute through its HaSET program is planning to hire a fellowship assistant for one year with possible extension. This position will be hired through and based at EPHI.

    Summary of Responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of the health system and reproductive health research directorate,HaSET program director and the fellowship lead, the HaSET fellowship assistant will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Actively support the overall program design, advocacy, communication, and launch of the HaSET research fellowship program

  • Support the recruitment of postdoctoral and implementation fellows in coordination with the HR department at EPHI

  • Establish a
    database and personnel profiles of all fellows who are enrolled for the post-doc fellowship program including their mentors and supervisors

  • Proactively follow up on the milestones and day to day business of the fellowship program including: organizing regular follow-up and review meetings, drafting meeting agendas, taking meeting minutes, compiling notes, and sharing information and updates with the management team

  • Lead planning for the supply and logistics required for all lectures, events, and field implementation of the research work and making sure that the necessary supplies are available on time and are used efficiently

  • Coordinate the schedules of fellowship mentors and fellows to ensure regular check-ins; support fellows with developing timelines and work plans

  • Collaborate with the Harvard-based HaSET fellowship point-person to integrate fellowship learning modules with the fellowship activities and timeline

  • Support fellows with research needs, including IRB submissions, supplies procurement, travel, and seating space within EPHI

  • Draft letters and other correspondence related to the fellowship program

  • Be willing to take any additional assignments and responsibilities given by the HaSET program director

    Job Requirements

  • Minimum of Masters degree in health and health science related fields

  • Minimum of four years experience as a research assistant, or experience in conducting both quantitative and qualitative research in MNCH and MNCH related fields.

  • Experience with administrative coordination within the government system, a university, or an NGO.

  • Proficiency with software applications including web browsers, e-mail, MS Word and Excel, google drive and other applications, and other clerical and record keeping functions

  • Experience with course development, such as syllabus and learning material development, is desired.

  • Ability to organize work to meet any competing priorities and work independently with minimum supervision

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to communicate well orally and in written in both English and Amharic
