Job Description

  • The Haile-Manas Academy (HMA) is a new, private co-ed residential school that will provide Ethiopia’s most promising secondary students a world class education and will help transform the education available to all Ethiopian students. HMA is located in Debre Birhan.

  • HMA is seeking a Director of Human Resources to be an integral part of its leadership team.

  • Under the general supervision of the Deputy Head of School, the Director of Human Resources has the responsibility to communicate and administer employee relations, training, employment, labor relations and related policies as well as community and administer benefits to the entire HMA community.

  • The Director of Human Resource is expected to work onsite Monday through Friday.

  • The position is open immediately.

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities

    Policies and Protocols

  • Works closely with other HMA senior administrators to create human resources policies and procedures for a new school

  • Partners with administrators, faculty and staff to communicate human resource policies, procedures, laws, standards and regulations
    Participates in regular meetings with the Deputy Head of School to review the status of all human resource matters

  • Regularly reviews HMA salaries and benefits and the salaries and benefits offered nationally and makes recommendations for changes as appropriate

    Record Keeping & Reports

  • In coordination with HMA finance staff, oversees the preparation and processing of HMA payroll, time off, sick leave, benefits and other payroll deductions and develops comprehensive record keeping and reporting for same

  • Develops, prepares and maintains such other routine reports as are necessary to carry out all human resources functions. Prepares periodic reports for management, as necessary or requested, to track strategic goal accomplishment.

    Employee Relations

  • Takes lead in establishing standard recruiting and hiring practices and procedures necessary to recruit and hire a superior workforce.

  • Coordinates recruitment of
    staff by posting positions on relevant job sites, including the school’s website, and appropriate advertising sources.

  • Reviews applications and interviews applicants for staff positions to match experience with specific job-related requirements.

  • Coordinates the pre-hire background checks for all employees

  • Process new hires and conducts new-hire onboarding, including with respect to benefits orientation

  • Works with the HMA Wellness Center to manage the credentialing process specific to Wellness Center staff so nurses are able to on-board smoothly and function in the capacity for which they were hired

  • Manages the faculty reappointment process every year

  • Communicates with internal and external constituents to resolve issues and to ensure timely processing of new-hire/appointment or reappointment, termination and other related transactions

  • Develops, facilitates and/or provides training (including orientation) to new employees

  • Proactively responds to employee relations issues such as employee complaints, harassment allegations and civil rights complaints.

  • Develops employee review processes, performance management and improvement plans

  • Conducts exit interviews, analyzes data and makes recommendations to the school administration for corrective action and continuous improvement

  • Maintains and coordinates employee recognition programs

  • Develops and implements protocols for employee safety

    Other

  • Manages the visa and work permit process for incoming foreign faculty

  • Oversees processing of short-term visitors, volunteers and guests, both domestic and international

    Job Requirements

    Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Human Resources Management/Development or related field

    Experience

  • A minimum of five years related experience

  • Excellent computer skills

  • Ability to quickly acquire knowledge of school policies, procedures, and systems as well as help craft policies that are not yet in place

  • Unquestionable high personal integrity
    Self-starter capable of taking initiative within defined parameters

  • Ability to collaborate with other HMA colleagues

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in both Amharic and English

  • Excellent time management and organization skills, with attention to detail and ability to establish priorities and follow up on multiple issues in a time sensitive manner

  • Skilled at information gathering and data management

  • Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, firmness, and collaboration with others at all levels.
