Equity Bank Head of Trading Jobs in Kenya; To provide strategic leadership in delivering innovative and customized Foreign Exchange (FX), Fixed Income (FI), derivatives, and commodity hedging solutions to institutional, corporate, SME, and retail clients across Kenya.
The role manages the trading desk, drives market-making activities, and structures tailored financial solutions addressing risk management and investment needs, optimizing returns, and supporting business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy
Position the bank as a regional hub connecting African commodity, FX & FI, and Rates markets with international financial markets
Identify opportunities across FX, Rates, and Commodities and drive client engagement through integrated solutions
Monitor performance against strategic targets with proactive controls
Expand the bank’s sales, structuring, and derivative trading franchise in Kenya
Develop tailored solutions for corporates, financial institutions, and SMEs addressing risk management and financing needs
Contribute to commodities strategy aligned with regional growth priorities
Collaborate with product, coverage, and operations teams for seamless client solutions
Risk Management & Compliance
Ensure structured deals comply with regulatory requirements across jurisdictions
Work with risk teams to assess credit, market, and operational risks in commodity transactions
Promote sustainable financial products aligned with ESG standards
Identify, measure, and mitigate Liquidity, FX, and Interest Rate risk across the Group
Oversee hedging strategies aligned with risk appetite and policies
Manage counterparty exposures and maintain strong banking relationships
Governance & Processes
Supervise structuring deal processing and execution across Treasury units
Ensure daily transactions align with business goals
Execute commodity and derivative transactions per governance documentation
Maintain compliance with Group policies and regulatory requirements
Promote strong control culture and resolve risk/compliance issues
Engage with auditors and ensure audit readiness
Represent Structuring & Derivatives in governance forums and industry engagements
Talent Management
Mentor junior staff and build expertise in commodities
structuring
Develop a high-performing, diverse talent pipeline aligned to Group values
Core Accountabilities & Deliverables
Ensure trading and structuring activities comply with policies and prudential guidelines
Provide timely MIS, trading performance, structuring pipeline, revenue analytics, and risk reports
Lead and develop trading and structuring teams across markets
Drive execution of Group Treasury strategy, enhancing FX and FI trading franchise
Qualifications
Academic
Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or related field
Master’s Degree preferred
Professional Certification
CFA, FRM, or equivalent
ACI Dealing Certificate (mandatory)
Experience Requirements
10+ years’ Treasury/Global Markets experience, minimum 5 years in trading/leadership
Proven track record in FX, FI, and commodity products, structuring, and risk management solutions
Deep understanding of liquidity management, funding structures, and financial markets
Strong knowledge of African financial markets and regulatory environments
Key Technical Skills & Leadership Competencies
Expertise in financial products, markets, and economic fundamentals
Strong trading and platform knowledge
Knowledge of treasury, retail, corporate, and capital market products
Business acumen and project management skills
Strong knowledge of commodity markets (energy, metals, agriculture)
Expertise in derivatives and risk management
Ability to navigate complex regulatory environments in Africa
Strategic mindset, effective communication, ethical leadership, and customer focus
