Equity Bank Data Privacy Officer Jobs in Kenya;The Data Privacy Officer will ensure the organization processes personal data in a compliant and ethical manner.
A key challenge will be to create a framework that enables lawful data sharing across business licenses and jurisdictions to deliver a seamless customer onboarding experience (“One Customer View”) while upholding the highest standards of data privacy and security.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Governance
Develop, implement, and maintain EBKL’s data protection strategy, policies, and procedures
Establish a Bank-wide data governance framework as central authority for data protection matters
Serve as primary point of contact for data protection authorities and regulators
Advise Board and senior management on obligations, risks, and regulatory changes
Oversee creation and maintenance of data inventory and flow maps
Compliance & Risk Management
Monitor compliance with GDPR, Kenya Data Protection Act, and other laws
Conduct and oversee Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
Maintain records of processing activities (ROPA)
Establish framework for managing data subject requests (access, rectification, erasure)
Ensure registrations and notifications to relevant authorities
Identify, assess, and mitigate data protection risks across EBKL and third parties
Ensure contracts and data sharing agreements include adequate data protection clauses
Data Sharing Enablement
Design and implement legal and technical mechanisms for lawful data sharing
Review intra-group data sharing agreements with defined purpose, legal basis, and safeguards
Advise on anonymization, pseudonymization, and privacy-enhancing techniques
Incident Management
Develop and manage EBKL data breach incident response plan
Lead investigation, mitigation, and reporting of data breaches
Training & Awareness
Roll out mandatory data protection training for employees and contractors
Promote
“privacy by design” culture across the organization
Provide expert advice to business units (Banking, Insurance, Mobile Payments, Foundation)
Work with IT and Information Security teams to ensure technical and organizational measures
Establish metrics and reporting mechanisms to monitor effectiveness of data protection program
Partner with Group and stakeholders in regulator engagements on draft regulations
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Law, IT, or related field (Master’s is a plus)
Professional certification in data protection/privacy (CIPP/E, CIPT, CIPM, FIP) required
8–10 years’ senior data protection experience in financial services or technology
Expert knowledge of GDPR and African data protection laws
Experience developing and implementing enterprise-wide privacy frameworks
Strong understanding of IT security controls and privacy-enhancing technologies
