About the Internship

Equality Now is implementing a three-year project themed ‘Gender Justice: Expanding GEF and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Accountability in Kenya’ whose overall goal is to improve the implementation of gender-focused laws and policies by the Government of the Republic of Kenya on protection and promotion of the rights of women and girls in line with the Government’s GEF commitments, SDG5 priorities and legal commitments included in the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol).

The project seeks to advance the Multi-Sectoral Approach (MSA) to enhance the effective collaboration of state actors and hold the Kenyan government to account for the protection of women and girls against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and harmful practices, including female genital mutilation (FGM), Child Early and
Forced Marriage (CEFM).

The Intern shall mainly provide support to the Gender Justice project. The main responsibilities are highlighted below.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Research primary prevention of sexual and gender-based violence and link the same with women's economic empowerment for Busia, Kisumu and Makueni County;

  • Support the programmatic leads to develop a brief on women's economic empowerment to guide the implementation of WEE initiatives at the county level;

  • Overall research on emerging issues on SGBV that affect the implementation of the Gender Justice Project;

  • Provide administrative support in planning for county or national engagements with stakeholders under the Gender Justice Project;

  • Support with the development of reports and minute-taking at convenings; and

  • Any other support may be required to support the Gender Justice Project.

    Qualifications:

  • A Degree in Law or social sciences;

  • Experience in women’s rights and sexual and gender-based violence or violence against women is a plus;

  • Strong feminist thinking and analysis;

  • Strong research and excellent writing skills in English;

  • Excellent organizational skills;

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure;

  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and work with diverse people; and

  • Participate effectively in a team and information-sharing environment, collaborating and cooperating with others.
