ESD in Brief: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an Ethiopian Residents Charity committed to work with children, youth and women in three regional states: Amhara, Oromiya and SNNPR states.

ESD believes in a country without poverty, marginalization and exclusion. We strive for creating a brighter future for children, youth and women through education, skill training and women livelihood promotion in partnership with communities and their institutions and other stakeholders.

Job Purpose: The main purpose of the job is to ensure quality implementation of projects both in urban & rural intervention districts and towns in Amahara, Oromia and SNNPR through providing effective and appropriate technical support and on-going monitoring and evaluation including development of new proposals for sustainable program interventions.

Major Roles and Responsibilities

Program Development and Management

The incumbent of this post has the main responsibility & roles:

  • Lead and implement on-going projects in collaboration with other staff and relevant stakeholders;
  • Identify & implement project with innovations, models and practices that have the most effect in the target groups in urban and rural setting;
  • Participate actively in planning, designing and developing of project interventions; provide technical advice on the preparation of project work plan and monitoring of the project implementation;
  • Contribute to the development of local economic strategies and plans in line with national & regional frameworks;
  • Work on program quality, efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability and impact;
    Work on donors’ grants and compliance issues and fulfil donor guidelines and requirements in the implementation of the projects; ESD
  • Assess partners, government and ESD staff training and capacity building needs,organize and conduct training and workshops with concerned head office staff;
  • To technically support the activities of actors in the energy sector in general and solar energy in particular in order to achieve the projects objective;
  • Explore ways to co-implement energy project (solar energy project) with private sector appropriate private sectors and relevant government sector offices;
  • Analyze the value chain of some selected commodities including solar technology equipment from the production to the client and identify their gaps and bottle necks;
  • Support in and prepare technical reports based on standard set and review based on the feedback given;
  • Provide strategic guidance on project implementation in partnership with private sector;
  • Support and supervise project staff;
  • Perform other duties assigned by the manager;

    Resource Mobilization

  • Together with existing and new potential partners, undertake situational analysis/research, identify new program interventions and prepare project proposals & concept notes for
    funding;
  • Map local resources, maintain contact and explore possibilities for resources with potential private sectors & communities & their institutions;
  • Involve partners, existing and potential actors during resource mobilization events;
  • Develop concept notes that suit potential funding organizations (both donors and private sectors);

    Partnership, Networking and Learning.

  • Network, maintain communication & share experience with diverse actors to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of project activities and promote best practices;
  • Network for learning and experience sharing with development actors to learn and inform on best practices, approaches, tools and methods of rural and urban programming;
  • Promote and encourage expertise sharing and close working relationship within the coordination office and the organization in general;

    Financial Management

  • Prepare project budget and manage and follow up to ensure efficient use of resources;
  • Review monthly management accounts and ensure budgets are utilized as per plan and following standard financial procedures and Charities and Civi Societies law

    Communication Role

  • To be aware of what is being done locally and regionally in the energy sector in general and solar energy, environment and climate change in particular;
  • Promote the image of the organization using different strategies;
  • Monitoring and reporting on the overall project’s activities
  • Establish and improve a monitoring system at the coordination office; Carry out monitoring and reporting;
  • Actively participate in a knowledge mapping & management culture;
  • Support the administration of the program management;
  • Ensure that the rules and regulations of ESD are always respected;

    Staff directly supervised:

    project officers and Area coordinators

    Job Requirements

    Job Requirements/qualifications required

  • BA/MA in Economics, energy & natural resource management with economic
    understanding, or in other related social science subject;
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in the sector of value chains, women empowerment, education, migration, WASH other social and livelihood
  • projects/programs for MA holder and minimum of eight years for BA holder
  • Understanding for solar energy management,
  • Professional experience in an NGO sector;
  • Have proven communication skills;
  • Good mastering of the English and Amhara language, Oromiffa language is an asset
  • Proven knowledge on the GO Polices and Strategies of MWCYA, MOE, Charities and
    Societies Agency etc
