Org. Setting and Reporting

These positions are located at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Security and Safety Service (SSS-ECA), Office of the Executive Secretary.

Under the overall command of the Chief of Service, the Security Sergeant is required to perform security functions and reports directly to the Security Lieutenant or supervising officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Security Sergeant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Conducts daily briefings and assign officers to various functions or posts.
  • Supervises staff and carries out inspections to ensure that officers on duty are discharging their functions appropriately.
  • Examines routine reports prepared by subordinates and certify their accuracy.
  • Assigns cases to investigators, recommending action to be taken; directs sensitive and/or complex investigations.
  • Assists in preparing security plans, including traveling in advance, during trips of the Secretary-General or during visits of Heads of States.
  • Makes recommendations to the supervising officer on operational matters.
  • Briefs officers under command of possible security threats and related operational plans.
  • Assumes control of specific areas as assigned during periods of heightened security.
  • Counsels, coaches and mentors officers under command.
  • Provides input for the performance evaluation of security personnel under command.
  • Prepares written reports of all unusual incidents.
  • Makes recommendations on basic security operation.
  • Performs all other related duties as required.

    Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional security, police or military training is required. Must have passed the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT). A first university degree in Police/Military, Law, Business Administration, Social/Political Science or related field is desirable.

    Work Experience

  • At least five (5) years of experience in areas of the security operation in Police, Military or UN Security Service. Experience of working in different security sectors and/or a client focused organization is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral
    and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

    Assessment

  • Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise, a competency-based interview and a physical fitness test.

  • Internal and external candidates with the required qualifications must pass the written entrance test for United Nations Security and Safety staff. An invitation to participate in the test will be sent by e-mail to candidates with the required qualifications. External candidates will be responsible for any travel expenses incurred in order to take Security Officer Test (SOT) and physical fitness test and, in the event of an employment offer, any cost related to travel and relocation to the duty station on appointment and separation. The candidate will also be responsible to obtain any visas and work permits in order to take up the appointment. If selected, external candidates will be recruited on a local basis and would not be entitled to international benefits.
  • The incumbent is required to work irregular shift hours on 24/7 basis. May be required to work extended duty shifts on short notice based on the exigencies of the service.
  • Physical condition: Must be in excellent physical and mental shape. The selected candidate is subject to satisfactory medical clearance that may includes a psychological test.
