The UNECA's mission is to deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa; informed by the 2030 SDGs and Agenda 2063. The mission is guided by ECA's five new strategic directions which are:

    The Private Sector Development and Finance Division (PSDFD) is responsible for supporting member States in their endeavor to achieve sustained economic growth and transformation through leveraging the role and resources of the private sector with an emphasis, on improving the business environment, increasing private sector investment in agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and services (technology), and promoting innovative financing models.

    This internship is in the Energy, Infrastructure, and Services Section (EISS) of the Private Sector Development and Finance Division at the Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Internship will be at the ECA, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

    The duration of the internship is six months on a full-time basis. Interns work five days per week (35 Hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. The internship certificate is awarded on the recommendation of the supervisor. The UNECA is mandated to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intraregional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development.

    Under the general guidance of the Chief of the "Energy, Infrastructure, and Services Section" and/or the direct supervision of a relevant responsible officer, the intern will make an important contribution to the work of the Section. Activities change according to the needs of the section, but typical tasks include the following:

  • Research: Assist officers of the Section to conduct analytical research on various issues related to the development and deepening of transport development (rail, road, air, maritime, inland waterways transports, and multimodal transport as well as road safety) at policy level as well as the use of transport models, new technologies (digitalisation, AI, etc) and energy
    to accelerate transport efficiency.

  • Information and data: Compile, process, and analyse information and data on transport (rail, road, air, maritime, inland waterways transports, and multimodal transports as well as road safety) in Africa and beyond, which may require econometric skills and economic modelling approaches.

  • Programme and project: Support officers of the Section to conduct programme and projects related to transport, energy, and economic development.

  • Other task: Carry out other tasks as required by the Section and the Division.

    Qualifications/special skills

    To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Civil engineering, Transport engineering, Transport economics or related fields;

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.

  • Your training, education, advanced course work, or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English or French is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
