Economic Commission for Africa Chief of Section - Economic Affairs Jobs in Ethiopia;The Chief of Section will lead the Natural Resources and Food Systems Section within the Climate Change, Food Security and Natural Resources Division (CFND).
The role provides policy guidance, oversees planning and management, ensures high‑quality outputs, and strengthens Africa’s resilience and sustainable development in the areas of natural resources governance and agri‑food system transformation.
Responsibilities
Provide policy guidance to the Director on strategy development and management of natural resources governance and agri‑food system transformation
Oversee planning and management of Section activities, ensuring timely delivery and coordination with UN agencies, donors, and partners
Manage and supervise the Section’s work programme and outputs
Provide substantive input for reports and position papers to intergovernmental bodies
Contribute to reporting on budget and programme performance
Ensure outputs meet high‑quality standards and comply with mandates
Prepare inputs for the Division’s work programme, set priorities, and allocate resources
Carry out administrative tasks including budgets, performance monitoring, and staff evaluations
Recruit, manage, and train staff, ensuring gender and geographical balance
Foster teamwork and communication across the Section and Division
Represent UNECA at inter‑agency meetings, seminars, and international conferences
Provide expertise on climate change issues and engage with development partners
Support formulation and implementation of gender‑sensitive policies in climate resilience
Establish and oversee research programmes to strengthen policymaker capacity
Promote policy, legal, and regulatory frameworks to enhance climate resilience

Qualifications
Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in Economics, Natural Resources Management, Food Policy, Law, International Development, or related field (required)
Doctorate (advantageous)
First‑level degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted
Experience
Minimum 10 years’ experience in natural resources governance, agri‑food system transformation, or sustainable development (required)
Experience in developing countries (desirable)
2+ years’ experience in data analytics (desirable)
Languages
Fluency in English or French (required)
Knowledge of the other language (desirable)
Knowledge of another UN official language (advantageous)
