Economic Commission for Africa Chief of Section - Economic Affairs Jobs in Ethiopia
Responsibilities
Provide policy guidance to the Director on strategy development and management.
Oversee planning and timely delivery of Section activities.
Manage and supervise the Section’s work programme.
Contribute to position papers and reports for intergovernmental bodies.
Report on budget and programme performance.
Ensure outputs meet high‑quality standards and comply with mandates.
Prepare inputs for Division work programme, set priorities, and allocate resources.
Carry out administrative tasks (budgets, performance monitoring, staff evaluation, recruitment).
Manage, guide, and train staff; foster teamwork and communication.
Represent UNECA at inter‑agency meetings and international forums.
Support gender‑sensitive climate policies for Africa’s sustainable transformation.
Establish and oversee research programmes to strengthen policymaking capacities.
Promote policy, legal, and regulatory frameworks for climate resilience.

Professionalism – Knowledge of climate change and sustainable development; ability to produce and review technical reports; persistence in problem‑solving.
Planning and Organizing – Clear goal setting, prioritization, risk management, and efficient use of time/resources.
Accountability – Ownership of responsibilities, compliance with regulations, and support for subordinates.
Empowering Others – Delegation, accountability, valuing staff input, and rewarding achievement.
Managing Performance – Clear roles, monitoring progress, feedback, coaching, and fair
appraisal.
Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Economics, Law, International Development, Climate Policy, Governance, Natural or Social Sciences required.
First‑level degree plus two additional years of experience may be accepted.
Doctorate is an advantage.
Work Experience
Minimum 10 years’ progressively responsible experience in climate change and sustainable development required.
Experience in developing countries desirable.
2+ years’ experience in data analytics desirable.
Languages
English or French required.
Working knowledge of the other desirable.
Knowledge of another UN official language an advantage.
